too young to mate

In our big cage we have a large female who was a good breeder for our friend and our little male who is fully grown but small and skinny. He seems to hang around with our 6 month old crestie alot. In fact, she is supposed to be too young to breed but she looks gravid...perhaps that whole "puberty" egg laying that sometimes happens, so I'm told. Is it possible that our male crestie got our 6 month old gravid while overlooking the other crestie who is of age?

What weight is the little female?? I think a lot of the time it is more on weight than age with them. I beleive (off the top of my head) that 35g upwards is an acceptable eweight for breeding females but it has been a while since I had breeders lol

Have you got pics of them

It is more than possible that the male has has his wicked way with your young female.....I hope she is ok....how many times have we heard on these forums not to keep opposite sexes together unless you intend to breed them? The little one should have been kept seperate until she was of the correct size....I just hope that if she is gravid she comes through it ok....if you have any more young one in that viv then I would seperate them straigh away.

Sorry just read that back and it comes across a bit flamey....wasn't meant to

The Rhacodactylus book by Devosjoli mentions that breeding Crested Geckos too young (generally less than a year) resulted in significantly shorter lifespans among the females. You should separate them asap and make sure that the female gets rehabilitated and given a nice long rest before trying again. In other words yes its a possibility but I wouldn't be handing around the cigars.

She's not all that small though, really. She's a big girl for her age, I've seen many a crestie smaller than her. I've got a spare cage...our poor male will be devastated.

I thought that the minimum approximate age for crestie maturity (and thusly mating) was 9 months? That's what everyone in Alberta says.

It doesn't seem like eggs though, really, she just seems fatter just anterior to the pelvic girdle...I think she just keeps eating more than her fill at dinner time now. The bulges aren't shaped right, as of tonight and are very soft, like the pot bellies they sometimes get after eating their faces off.

Generally speaking the ability to breed is usually based upon weight rather than age.
I wouldn't keep sub adults that aren't ready to be bred with adults of breeding weight. Maybe removing the smaller female with spark the males interests in the larger female and at the same time save the smaller one from the stress.

lol our "breeding male" never has actually reached breeding weight. He find himself incapable of breeding with much of anything.

That's the wrong approach. Reaching sexual maturity does not mean that they are prepared to breed. Just think human: girls reach sexual maturity sometimes as young as 7 years old.
