Graceland Renovation (Viv advice)

My decorating instincts have run amok, and I upgraded Elvis the Crested Gecko's enclosure. Here's a photo:

The substrate is stone tiles (marble, actually, ooh la la!), as well as some florist's moss. The plants are a stalk of "lucky bamboo," as well as some pothos cuttings (all rooting in a glass of water filled with glass pebbles). There is a bromeliad in a clay pot -- the potting soil is covered with more florist's moss. There is driftwood for climbing, a couple of hollow bamboo lengths that he likes to hide in, and a habba hut-type half-hollow log in the back. He's got a food dish near the back, too, sitting on the floor. I plan to use a grow light during the day, hung above the tank for the plants.

The background is cork tiles, which are actually attached to the outside of the back of the tank with packing tape. In the future I'd like to figure out how to attach them on the inside, and maybe attach some moss or small pots for the plants to that.

I like how it all looks, and I figure on removing and replacing the moss once a month or so, and giving the whole tank a good cleaning at the same time.

My question is: is the florist's moss safe for him? He loves to go around licking up water droplets, and I am a little concerned that it could be an impaction risk if he licks in too many moss particles. He's a little guy, about 3.5 inches long. Haven't weighed him yet, as he really just wants to be left alone (poor guy, all the redecorating is a bit much for him -- though he seemed to really have fun exploring it all last night when he emerged from hiding).

Hi Amy,

The tank is looking good, the little guy will really appreciate the new vivarium. The plant selection is good and the bamboo is a nice touch to replicating their natural environment. The bromeliad might fade but will stay alive, that is an epiphytic one so it shouldn't be in soil just sphagnum. The moss should be fine, most home improvment stores carry sphagnum for orchids, that is a much better choice if you can find it, I dont' think you need to replace the moss as often as you think, just make sure that it can drain so that it doesn't become saturated, sphagnun has HUGE capacity and will absorb a lot of water. The best way around impaction in my opinion is leaf litter. Collect some magnolia, ficus, or oak leafs and clean them with boiling or baking. Lay a nice thick layer on top of the moss, he'll probably burrow into the leaves. The pothos will root into the moss if you let it. I suggest replacing the moss with some sphagnum, if you can't find it locally it is pretty cheap on line, you can also use cocohusk instead of moss. A drainage layer will help to keep the soil from becoming saturated. You can attach the coco-mat inside of the enclosure with aquarium safe silicone/sealant. You'll need to tear the setup apart so that you can allow it to dry. Vining plants and epiphytes will grow into the moss to cover the back wall. Any pics of the little guy?

Wow, thanks for all the pointers, Cody. I did see sphagnum moss at Lowe's, so I can make that switch. I'm going to save your suggestions and enact them in a few weeks, once Elvis gets a little settled. (Of course, it will un-settle him again, but...) He's very very shy right now, I think feeling overwhelmed. Once he settles a bit, I'll try to get a picture or two!
