Is that normal??
It's now after 1a.m. in Switzerland and I've just been to see my snakes if everything is ok,like I do every night before closing the 'reptile room' and go to bed and for the first time Nikita my russian rat snake is sleeping in the open in a corner. She's been there hours before and now she sleeps there. Is that normal behaviour?
I never thought this girl would start to worry me;I just hope that she will behave normal in the morning. To me it looks very unusuall when a snake sleeps in the open at night, without any cover. She is not even curled up;her head touches her tail and the rest of her body is in waves,if you know what I mean. I really do worry big time!! Please help.I couldn't think what's wrong with her;she eats f/t (but not lately,as I told in another thread),so I don't think she could have pasasites;her terrarium is always clean and she gets enough water. The temps are like always and humidity is fine too(as recommended). And she was quite active today. |

Perfectly normal, 1 of my Corns seems to alternate days in the hide and out.

Jacky, again don't worry - absolutely nothing abnormal or wrong about this. Just because she usually sleeps in one place doesn't mean she won't sometimes sleep in other places. I really wouldn't be concerned about the feeding issue either - Nikita can see how stressed out you are getting and is really thinking "haha this is fun!", just as when we make sure all the snakes are clean before we go on holiday we can guarantee someone will "go" while we are not here - I hope not!! Don't really want to return to my landlady being bitten by the 9ft python LOL

Same here...my corns and python hide sometimes and other times they're hanging out all over the place! Perfectly normal. I figure it's a good thing when they do that because it must mean they feel secure and safe enough not to have to hide.

LOL Rachel,I really start to think she's laughing at me
Juliane,I too tought first that she might just feel secure enough to sleep outside her hide, which makes a snake keeper really happy, but the worry that something might be wrong was stronger to believe.Well, you know you and me are "the Worriers"(I hope I spelled that right ).But she was her old self this morning, very nosy and curious. When she's not clinbing, sleeping or hiding, she needs to know what's going on outside her terrarium, lol. It's very cute to watch, because she needs to lift her head at the front of the terrarium, because the sliding doors are on a 4" wood. When you see her from further away you only see half of her head, looking over the rim, which is very cute. You really could think she is a nosy snake. But as I was told she was always very curious and starting that in her new home tells me that she completly settled in,which I'm very happy about. ![]() |

I have a Russian too and he does that all the time. Sleeps in one corner out of the hide. No matter how many hides I provide, they seem to like sleeping in the open.

Heh, heh, nothing at all to worry about. It is simply a matter of preferences. We have a female Fl Pine that always slept in her hide which looked somewhat like a beaver dam. Then about 3 months ago she just started sleeping in the open most of the time. She still eats fine and her sweet disposition has not wavered a bit and she was wild caught about 3 yrs. ago.
