Nikita update

Today my Nikita ate again, jeepeee!!! But I had a bit of a struggle to get her out of her terrarium, lol.By the time the rat was nice, soft and warm, she climbed up the branches and I had to unwind her;had to get my boyfriend to stand by,in case he would have to unwind her tail, lol, but somehow I managed by myself.I just 'folded' her,to get to her tail, while holding the front of her.She really is such a sweetheart and never bites.I don't think that she ever will bite,or she would have done in the beginning.Got her now 5 weeks. Can't imagine what the owner before me did with her,'cause she always bit him!
Anyway,I'm very happy with her.Today she was VERY hungry and this time I had to put her first in the feeding box and then the rat,and doing so,she attackt it while I was still holding it,so she was VERY hungry!I think she would have eaten another one, lol. When I was opening the lid of the feeding box,she looked like expecting more food, but then she noticed that it was just me and she let me take her out with no rattling or anything, which made me very happy! She definetly is settling in!
Thanks for reading!!

Thanks Lyn!
Nikita still is a bit shy,but I guess as an older snake she just needs a little longer to settle in as young ones and she went through a lot, poor baby! But I love my big girl!!

Jacky it sounds great but with one exception. Your remark that "I don't think that she ever will bite,or she would have done in the beginning". is a concern. Never take that attitude with any reptile. There is always the possibilty of a bite. As docile as she appears she is still a snake and should be respected as what she is.

Getting too complacent is how bites happen.

Thanks guys!Merlin,as I reread my thread I imediately saw my mistake in writing that remark and I do apologize!Somehow I knew you'd say something like that and you are absolutly right!!
Just because she never bit 'the snake lady' while she had Nikita for about a year doesn't say that she will never bite me.And I must tell you that I'm quite nervous every time I take her out as she is my very first huge snake (I only dealt with baby snakes so far) and I do recpect her for what she is and am very alert and careful when taking her out.
But the fact that she did so well with me compared to the guy who had her before(he always got bitten,God knows what he did with her!) I'm quite proud of that.
I'm even alert and expecting a bite every time I take out my two 10 month old corns, specially with Chip. But you know, the funny thing tonight was that I wanted to get bitten by Chip, just to know how it feels like and to have had this experience which,I guess, goes with the hobby, lol! Now tell me,is that crazy or what,LOL!?
And another thing; so far,I only take Nikita out on feeding day,as I have her now for only six weeks,I don't want to stress her too much. As she is no baby, she is used to being handles and doesn't need training. What do you think, should I take her out more?Really don't want to stress her too much.

Jacky, if you've had her for 6 weeks I would say she is as adjusted as she's going to get. Take her out,,,,maybe for a few minutes each time, slowly increasing the ammount of time you handle her. Just make sure to wait 3 days after feeding.

Best of luck

Yep, handle away Jacky. If you haven't handled her so much yet then as Ken said might be an idea to build it up slowly. Some snakes remain docile throughout their lives, and our corns for example are still very calm even though they don't come out as much as we managed to handle them when they were young. Rat snakes however are a different matter!! Handle her as much as you can now and hopefully she'll be nice and calm as an adult - that's what i'm hoping for Umai, our radiated rat.

We actually never used to wait after feeding to handle, and never had a regurg from it, but we wait a day or two now to handle, to let the food digest - if we feed on a sunday we will handle again on the tuesday.

Good luck, still waiting for pictures.....
