This evening when I got home I tried how Nikita will react when I take her out,as she wasn't used to that for quite a while(except on her moving day).I removed her hide and let her be exposed for a few minutes.As she didn't get away I touched her gently and she rattled at me.I waited a moment and touched her again,to try and find out if she will strike or not.I lifted her up and out of the terrarium and round my neck;she's got quite a weight,LOL!!.When you don't know a snake it is a very strange feeling because you never know how they react.But as I had some information on her character I was a bit calmer but still a bit mixed feelings.Actually I wanted to try and feed her,but as she hadn't shed I thought I wait.
But what can I tell you,she was a sweetheart!! I walked a bit around with her,sat with her and inspected her skin,because she is overdue with shedding!! About four days ago she lost the blueish eyes and as I know it,shouldn't they shed one to two days after?!?
Did I do the wrong thing in taking her out? I had her out for maybe ten minutes or so and then I put her in her big waterdish,which is a cat litter out of plastic.I thought it helps her shedding.She slitherd out of it,remained on the ground and when I put her hide right again she rattled again.Do you think she wasn't ready yet to be taken out and still needs to settle in? It was the first time this morning,after about a week,that she came out of her hide again,so I thought that by the time I came home tonight she will have shed,but no way! Her temps are around 70%.The guy I got her from said she even sheds in one piece at only 50% humidity.
Anybody can give me advice?I'd be very grateful!!Thanks!!

for shedding it varies... at least for my snakes it does lol. after they go into shed then clear up after the blue phase it can take them anywhere around 2 to 5 days before I find shedding in their tanks. she'll probably shed in the next couple days so you shouldn't be worried about that.

you said her temps are about 70? is that on both sides of the terrarium or just one side? i'm a little confused by that. or are you talking about the humidity?

I don't think you did the wrong thing taking her out...it sounds like she did quite well Don't worry about the shedding yet...mine have taken longer than two days before so be patient...it'll probably happen in the next couple of days or so.

Guess what,Nikita shed this evening!! And I learned something today from that VERY experienced snake lady at the reptile store: adult snakes take up to a week after the 'blue phase' until they shed. I didn't know that.Did you guys know that?
Well,anyway,the guy I have her from was bitten by Nikita many times and he only had her for 6month! The snake lady had her for about a year and was never bitten by her.She told me the reasons why the guy was bitten; he stuffed Nikitas 5'something body in a not even 3' tank and he fed her inside the tank! Now imagine the danger for the snake,having a big rat live rat and the snake in such a small enclosure;crazy! The lady also told me that snakes do get more agressive in too small enclosures.
Well,she rattled at me ,but didn't strike,and I think in a few weeks time she will know me so far that she doesn't have to be frightend anymore.She's a great snake girl! I love her!
By the way,I wasn't able to take out the skin yet,'cause part of it is in her hide,so I have to wait 'til tomorrow.But she shed in one piece and I want to meassure it.During her shed the humidity went even down to nearly 60% and it still came off beautifully!
When I got her she had still a tiny bit of old skin on the very tip of her tail,and I couldn't get it off ('was afraid to hurt her) and I thought the tiny bit of her tail is doomed to fall off,but now it also came off with the shedding,yeepeee!!

glad she finally shed for you. i didn't know that but I did now that sometimes it takes my rosy boa about 7 days to shed after blue phase. he's about 3 years old.

wow now wonder he was bitten alot. snake probably thought she was getting food every time the cage was opened. and a live rat? yikes...

Yea,I'm looking forward to the day when she wants to come out by herself,as she used to do with the previous owners.

i'm sure that will happen as she gets used to her new home and being around you. as soon as my snow realizes that I took the lid of the tank he'll find his way out on his own. its cute to watch.
