It will basically depend on the size of the snake. A hatchling and juvenile can eat one prey item every 5-7 days. As the snake gets larger the interval will be more spread out,,ie a 7 footer will not eat weekly as the prey items are larger and take longer to digest. How big is your Rainbow now ?

Ken is correct, I run everything from a 5 day to a two week rotation depending on the snake. You have to learn what the snake wants to do. Start with 7 days, if the snake is hesitant to take a prey item, wait a few days. If the snake goes nuts like it's starving, shorten it by a day. There is no definitive answer to your question since all snakes are different, but you'll find a schedule that works.

Once a week is fine for the little guy. Keep good records, this will help to get into a rhythm and to see feeding patterns in your snake. (I weigh the food item before feeding and write that down too -- I have my own kitchen scale for the snake food!).
I feed the big girls (6ft) every 14 days.

You don't have to weigh the food... I do it for all my snakes because I'm a control-freak and want to know exactly how much they're eating. I've found I'm a pretty poor judge of mice and rat sizes... I think, "hmm that looks like the right size" in the store and try to compare it to what I think is the thickest part of my snake and I get it home and it's either too big or too small for one meal.
When I get the rats home, I weigh them and put them in individual freezer bags with the weight written on the outside. On feeding day, I can just grab the bag(s), check my records and calculate: "Hmmm Talyn ate a 200g rat two weeks ago and did fine... this rat is 180g... that's close enough." or I don't have any of the bigger rats, so a 78 gr and a 110 gr rat would work too. Or if I know that they just came out of a shed cycle and used up a lot of energy, I might choose to feed them 10-20gr more. When I was first trying to fatten Q up, I fed her more with each feeding: she did OK with 110g but regurged one rat when I fed her 150g... so I've been keeping her feedings below 150gr. You don't have to do that, but I find a lot of added enjoyment with detailed record keeping: I have a little pocket calendar split into different columns: feeding ie: 2R (for two rats) 60g/98gr (158g), then a column for urine and a column for stool: I use a star system to rate the size produced (**), a column for shedding info: dull colors, clouding up, full blue, clearing, shed: 1piece, 3 pieces, etc., a column for water changes, length and weight columns and an "other" column for things like Quarantine, vet visits, stool samples sent and results from, medication, if and when I get bit, complete terrarium clean-outs, etc. Here's a picture from Monty's records in January. I don't know if you can read the exact notes, but it gives an idea what I mean. (It's also great to have this information all together and portable for vet visits!!)

Ive gone onto 2 weeks feeding with bigger prey items, Bounce (my Boa)took her first adult mouse yesterday which should last her 2 weeks, left a nice lump, and the size of rats Pixel is eating should last him, whew 3 weeks, but will try him in two weeks anyway unless shedding,
Just go with what you think is right for your snake skull, I did't think Bounce would take an adult mouse, it went down no trouble, she struck it a few times and spat it out again, but I think that was to do with color, she normally has brown mice, this one was white, but eventually she ate it, if your unsure of a prey item go with two smaller ones. What are you feeding your Brazilian Rainbow Boa? if its leaving a nice big lump you could go two weeks, if not, then I would do one week or up the prey item slightly, you will soon get into a nice pattern of what size and how often to give him/her food. Bounce is coming on nicely on 2 weekly feedings, and she is only about your BRBs size, plus I get to handle her a lot more, and she gets to hang out more in the bedroom, 2 weekly feedings also gives you more time to get to know your snake. As long as s/he is shedding often and isn't starving or losing weight, you will be fine with whatever you choose ![]() |
