Is it normal for a 100-150 W mercury vapor bulb to die after 6 months? I had the idea in my mind that they lasted about a year? I bought one in December or January and it just went out. I'm too used to fluorescents, this is the first MV I've ever bought.

Yes Matt- Brand is important, some are better, some or worse.

Also, some are fragile and do not tolerate movement well, especially if the lamp is hot.
