well the flower is looking bad, it's slumping and looks about dead. Hopefully i'll get some pups soon. When I get them, how long before I can cut them from the mother plant? and where exactly do I cut them?

You cut the pups at the base with a sharp knife when they are about 1/4 the size of the mother plant. It looks as though your bromeliad is also suffering from insuffecient lighting. You see how the color of the bract is fading? Under optimal conditions the whole bract would be colored and not turn green in color.
Eric, pineapples are a bromeliad. I don't know how you propogate a pineapple though, can you just place the top in the dirt and get a plant from it?

Supposedly they'll root, but I'm not sure if some type of rooting compound will help. I was 95% sure they were, but I've never seen another bromelaid that produces anything like a pineapple. I admit that I haven't seriously researched them...

i know the lighting is an issue, i just got my glass hood in a few days ago which I ordered. I went to find the lights but no one had "cool white" flourescent bulbs. At the store I got my frogs at, i found a bulb ment for plants that gives off 5000K, i think you said that I needed 5500k. If I cannot find the compacts, i'll have to use that but when I go to walmart i'll be able to find them probably. I am at my dad's house this weekend so chatting on HC is a possibility. Chronic, if you could get on HC chat sometime this weekend, i'd love to talk, it's much eaiser and faster that way.

Wal-mart is your best bet to find/buy the bulbs. They have some in the pet isle but those are overpriced, the small "cool white" ones should be in the home lighting section. Then all you'll need is a small clamp light and you will be in business. I only had one on my ten gallon (I recently switched to fluro tubes) and that kept everything thriving, my brom was producing colors but has faded since I switched lights, I thing the compact fluros are much more direct.
I don't know if I'll be able to get on the chat this weekend. Im visiting my parents for Easter and my mom's B-day, it has been non-stop since I got here.

well that's fine. I hope that i'll be able to find the bulbs, i'm heading out to get some as soon as the shop calls about my dad's car. I'll try and find some other plants to fill I some pockets in my tank. You told me before that I needed two of those bulbs. Well...... two clamp lamps are a little on the expensive side. Would it be ok to just use one even thought it's a 20 gal long with two broms?

The one bulb should work fine. Maybe just move it every once in a while so the whole tank gets light. How are your Fruit fly cultures doing by the way?
I would wait a little longer. I've pulled them off when they look like that and it took a while for it to start to root, it didn't do much for a while, just sat there dormant.

my mom is at home depot as I type this. She has been having trouble finding the regular flourescent bulbs that screw into a socket other than a 60 watt bulb. There is also a flouro tube at my local pet shop that gives off 5000k. If I cant get the right kind of bulb i'm going to replace the broms with some other medium light plants I got at lowes.
The fruit flies are going great, i currently have three cultures, one is going strong, one is almost dead, and the other one is just starting to produce some pupa on the sides of the culture.
