How Do Dart Frogs Produce Their Poison?

Ok guys clear this up for me. I am by no means an expert w/ Dart frogs. However I was told that they produce their poison from eating fire ants. Therefore captive dartfrogs would not be poisonous since they don't have a steady diet of fire ants.

True or False?

Re: How Do Dart Frogs Produce Their Poison?

I'm not sure its fire ants specifically, but its whatever they consume in the wild. Captive darts are not poisonous.

It is a certain species of ants - not sure if it's fire or other.

Re: How Do Dart Frogs Produce Their Poison?

They produce it though eating any slightly toxic insect. IE. ants, bees, millipedes, centipedes, exec. What they do is store the alkylates in their skin using them for their own toxin. Not long ago they discovered a alkylate in one species of dart that it seems to produce on it's own without a specific diet.
