Poison Dart Frog Vivarium Setup?

I am looking for a good online resource for setting up a completely natural self contained vivarium for Poison Dart Frogs. I am going to be using a 55 Long aquarium for this. Things I would like it to include would be a waterfall, small stream, pond, live plants, and a background of some type. I was also curious as to how many frogs can be kept in a 55 gallon long and what other herps can be used in conjunction with the frogs? Maybe a gecko or some type? We are going to be using this setup as a display so I would like to make it as full of live (both plant and animal) as possible. Thanks for any help that you can offer me.

Re: Poison Dart Frog Vivarium Setup?

What are you going to be using it as a display for?

dartden.com and dendroboard.com are really really great places to get dart frog info from.

As far as other animals, I think a Day gecko would do fine, you just have to make sure you can suit all of the animals needs.

I'm pretty sure you can get about 5 - 7 darts with that size.

We will be using this as a display in our home. We are hoping to be able to rent "office space" to run our rescue out of one day though and thought that it might be a good display in there as well. But like I said, for now if will be a display in our living room Thanks for the links!

Re: Poison Dart Frog Vivarium Setup?

I do not have a problem with signing up for forums. In your opinion would a small gecko be the only other animal to consider putting in with the frogs? I would sort of like to put something a bit more exotic in there with them, maybe something that is equally colorful(or at least close since the color of these frogs is unmatched). Thanks again for all of the help. Also, something else that I thought of. If I get small fish do you think that they could live in the pond that I create for frogs? Just thought that would add another level of nature to it all.

Re: Poison Dart Frog Vivarium Setup?

You can also check out BlackJungle.com. They have a gallery with instructions on creating waterfalls and streams and adding plants.

We recently had quite a long discussion about PDF enclosures in this thread: I Adore Poison Dart Frogs, but Have Some Questions. You may want to take a few minutes to check it out too.

Before setting your mind on a multi-species tank, I'd do a lot of research on the feasibility of it. The crix for a gecko would probably put quite a lot of stress on the PDFs.

Using tongs is always a cure for that, not saying you should go right along and do it. You need to do a lot of research just as Steph said.

I'm pretty sure Day Geckos are the only kind that can be in a habitat like that. Have you seen a Day Gecko? I think they look magnificent. Fish can be used, I know of a couple people who have had them in their viv ponds.

Re: Poison Dart Frog Vivarium Setup?

I would keep away from mixing species at all. a 55 gallon is not that large.

Re: Poison Dart Frog Vivarium Setup?

I'll have to agree with liz, a 55 isn't really big enough to start mixing much of anything other than having fish. If you're determined to mix herp species, I'd suggest mixing two kinds of Darts, instead of darts and another herp.

Re: Poison Dart Frog Vivarium Setup?

You're safest bet is to keep to a single species tank. I wouldn't mix PDF species.
