Re: I Adore Poison Dart Frogs, but Have Some Quest
Hi. Glad to see you getting into frogs.
To answer a few questions: - A few good sites (like others already mentioned) DendroBoard.com, Dartden.com - As for the age thing....nothing forces you to say your real age (if my saying this violates any rules, i apologize, let me know and I'll edit it out) - Fruit Flies can easily be bought at blackjungle.com and edsflymeat.com. Black jungle does offer subscription plans where they will automatically ship you a culture or two every few weeks, but it is cheaper to culture your own. - That $50 for a culture kit sounds right to me. Its a 'KIT,' not a single culture. Meaning enough stuff to MAKE many cultures. Many cups, lids, media, instructions, and other things. Everything you need to actually make many cultures. prices will vary depending on the size of the kit. - Believe it or not, shallow ponds etc would let the frogs die more then deep ones. If a fight between two frogs happen, one could get pinned under the water and drown (as said on the first page). A deeper water feature will prevent this from happening. As long as they have a way to easily exit the water they will be fine. When my leucs were new, I saw them accidentally leap into their 4" deep pond a few times and they got back out of it as effortlessly as they went into it. They can swim, although are not excellent swimmers. - Be sure to spend some time on the viv. Chances are you will spend much, much, much more money on that then the frogs themselves, especially if you want to make it really nice to match the beauty of the frogs. If you look on DendroBoard.com, you will see tons of vivs that look stunning. You will also find tons of help in building a viv.

I have a lot of dart frogs, and they typically are not sold at pet stores. There are some good fruit fly culture kits at Edsflymeat.com. Tincs and thumbnails have a lot of different colors on them. Despite what you have heard, darts are very difficult to take care of, and I wouldn't reccomend mixing species for a beginner; that subject is very controversial. A 40 is plenty of space for darts. Males and females have no problem living together before their sexual maturity (1 year old). Thumbnails do well in groups. If you plan to get 4 to 5 frogs there is a good chance they will breed. Read up on taking care of eggs and tadpoles. Here are some good links: saurian.net (breeder and also has lots of info listed on the site), Doyle's Dart Den, also dendroboard allows kids that are 14 to register. There is a lot of other good info on the web.
If you want groups, consider D.leucomelas, auratus, and thumbnails. You can also get tincs, but they don't do well in groups. View these frogs pics at saurian.net. Have you read about quarintine?I would go on dendroboard and tell them what your planning to do.... |
