Re: Suitable Conditions

Don't know temps for the PDFs, but most people would agree that mixing species isn't a good idea...

Re: Suitable Conditions

I wouldn"t put anything but other darts (if they lived in the same area) with darts. Just based off their small size and breeding habits. 24-29C (about 75-80F) are good for all darts. The best substrate by far is moss or peat plates. Even better if used with a sloped floor and a sump tank to keep from becoming waterlogged from the amount of misting thats needed to stimulate breeding and proper humidity levels. Some companies make cages with a sloped floor and drain hole these by far are the best for dart frogs or you could add a false bottom and drain hole yourself.

Re: Suitable Conditions

here is a really great care sheet for dart frogs, and I would not keep them with red-eyes. They could become snack food.

Re: Suitable Conditions

No leucs with red-eyes. In fact most folks don't recommend keeping different species of PDFs together. Leucs with leucs... tincs with tincs... auratus with auratus, etc.

Obviously advice varies here, but temps can vary in the 70-80 F range. Optimal temps for most PDFs is 78.

My advice is to buy "Poison Dart Frogs" by Amanda and Greg Sihler.

If you're new to PDFs or herps in general, my advice is to research, research, research!

By the way, Liz, I didn't see a caresheet link.

Re: Suitable Conditions

That's cause I'm a dolt.
Amphibiancare.com >> Poison Dart Frog (Dendrobatidae) Care

Even though PDFs are found in tropical regions, they are found on the forest floor where it's cooler and can have serious health problems if the temps go above 80. They need a high humidity of 80% or higher and love tropical mosses to play on. I would set up a tank and have plants established for a few months before adding frogs, plus you need to learn how to make fruit fly cultures. No fruit flies = starving frogs.

Re: Suitable Conditions

LOL... my family keeps asking me how my pet flies are doing. Just tonight Mom asked if I was ever going to finish!

But yes, FLIGHTLESS fruitflies are a MUST with PDFs.
