Arboreal Poison Darts?
Does anyone know of any Arboreal Poison Dart frogs, obtainable, and prefferably under $40 bucks a piece. Also, can you mix different species of these frogs? i'd love to have one Terrestrial frog, and two to three Arboreal frogs. What about Different color morphs?

Re: Arboreal Poison Darts?
I would suggest trying to find a reptile expo in your area, they usually have breeders for all types of herps. As far as mixing species,,,it's really not a good idea. Most require different type of care/temps/setups and certain parasites that can be tolerated in 1 could be fatal to another.

Re: Arboreal Poison Darts?
Yeah, figured so, but was not sure about darts, If I were to get any I would be putting them in a vertical 29, its 2 1/2 feet tall, so there will definitly be a difference in humidity/temp from the ground and the "canopy" Probaly better safe then sorry though. Im wondering about the different color morphs though. I dont see why they would'nt do okay. same species, just different colors.

Re: Arboreal Poison Darts?
There are a few species. Very few, but they exist. there's also a good number that are Terrestrial/Arboreal. Dendrobates auratus I beleive is considered semi-arboreal, and Dendrobates reticulatus are an "arboreal dwelling species, dwelling in bromiliads 2-6m above the ground". I also remember seeing darts in an arboreal tank at the aquarium near me awile back, cant remember what type but they were all up in the branches and leaves. Im just wondering what else is out there.

Re: Arboreal Poison Darts?
they aren't really arboreal. That would mean they have suction cups to stick to things. These guys will hop up and around, however a horizontal tank with a hill is much better suited for darts.

Re: Arboreal Poison Darts?
Hm, didnt know that. Just assumed arboreal meant they lived away from the ground mostly. Well, maybe i'll still end up getting darts eventualy, but scratch the idea of converting another tank to vertical. So far i'm doing good converting the 29. Its great because the "bottom and top" once converted are the same size as a 10 gallon, so I may end up buying a 10 gallon light hood. should come out looking very trim.

Re: Arboreal Poison Darts?
Well, technically arboreal, as relates to animals, means tree dwelling. They don't have to have suction cups or anything, but even if they do climb a little, if they don't live in the trees, they're not really considered arboreal.
Whether or not some darts do, I have no idea. I don't know a lot about them. I was just chipping in with some vocabulary. ![]()

Re: Arboreal Poison Darts?
I'll start off saying I know this is an older thread but I don't know how I missed it. Sure their are a great number of aboreal darts the smaller Thumbnail Darts tend to only live in bromiliads and other plants.
The larger darts tend to stick to the bushes and ground areas. Darts like most frogs do have sticky toe pads though they tend not to climb glass much but more hang out in the plants. For any of the smaller darts such as E. Tricolor a taller tank isn't needed they are small 30-35mm, but males will fight over the highest calling spot.
