Poison dart frogs?
Ok I got a call a little bit ago for five poison dart frogs in a 10 gallon tank. This is a new one for me as I have never been asked to take any. I only know the little I have read about them, but isnt a 10 gallon tank too small for 5? The only openings I have are 1, 29 gallon and 2, 10 gallon spots. all my big enclosures are taken. I really also know nothing about them. I have not commited myself to them as I would need to know a lot more first.
So anyone have any suggestions or advice, or would I get myself in over my head? If they require ample amounts of care then I cannot do it. If they are as easy as the white's then I can. let me know. Thanks |

Nicole, I'm sorry but I don't know any thing about poison dart frogs and haven’t researched them much, I would love to have some someday but they are out of my price range. LOL I did extensive research on the red eyed tree frog and did the care sheet. The size enclosure for them (I hope my memory is correct) is 10 gallon for the first and then 5 gallons for each additional frog. They are arboreal so you need a tall enclosure. I think one of the Cody's raises them and will chime in soon.

Poison Dart Frogs Poison Arrow Frogs Dart Frogs & Exotic Tropical and Carnivorous Plants with Terrarium & Vivarium Supplies by Black Jungle Terrarium Supply
This is a link I found that actually seems to have pretty good information about keeping the PDF's skimming through it I found that 2-3 of the yellow and black or green and black PDF can be kept in a 10 gal or 3-4 in a 20 gal. So if you have a 29 gal that should be fine for 5... hope this helps. according to the information on that site they aren't horribly difficult to care for. |

That is so not going to work for me! Shoot I killed the cactus my kids gave me! I think I watered it too much ! I can grow anything outside but not even a chance on the inside! Can I use fake plants? |

I think the thing with the dart frogs is the humidity levels and live plants need moisture thus keeping the humidity up...I believe even with fake plants the levels can be kept up ...and I think where the dart frogs are about the size of the end of your pinky...a 10 gallon is not horrible but they like to spread out I assume and hide from each other...I think the 29 gallon tank would do for them. I think they are gorgeous to look at (with a magnifying glass LOL) good luck with them!!!!

You can buy "frog moss" (it's dried moss that you just add water to and it "comes back to life") for the tank, and philodendrons are pretty easy to avoid killing. Add some fake plants and such, and they would have plenty of cover and humidity. Your substrate will make a big difference in the humidity level, too. Also, a shallow dish with some clean rocks and some water in it will help keep things moist.
(Not that I have ever kept darts -- just some basic ideas that might help.) CodyW is the dart guru, I think (and he knows a lot about keeping live plants).

You can also put a shallow container for water with a bubble stone in it. If only you were closer, I'd take them off you hands.

Hey Nicole,
5 PDFs in a 10 gallon tank is overcrowded, you probably aren't getting darts that are in the best shape. If they have to go I bet that you could (I can help) to relocate the darts to someone who is more interested in treating them (they probably need to be dewormed). Darts also need fruit flies or something similar such as springtails or pinhead crickets. Setting darts up in temporary enclosures is a possibility to quarintine and seperate them. Simple setups of shoebox sterilites with some leaf litter and paper towels is adequate. It sounds like they need to go to someone who is more interested, they are very hardy animals so recovery and holding them won't be the biggest challenge ever (I think an ig would require MUCH more than even 20 darts). If you take them in, i'll be more than happy to walk you through setting it up and getting them established until you can adpot them out. |

Thank you everyone for the great responses! I did some small research and went out and bought a book and decided at the moment that it would not be a good idea for me to take them as I know nothing about them and it sounds to me like they would be more care than I could possibly give right now. I have my hands full at the moment with what I have and they do not seem to be that easy to care for. I gave him a few different numbers to call so I hope he has luck finding a place for them! I am about to get in 2 very sick red tail boas and have two extremely sick igs along with the many others. I just cant do it! But boy they would have been a great learning experience for me.......... oh well maybe some other time.
once again thanks so much!
