Sad today

This first message comes with sadness. Our leo died yesterday. He was 2 years old and his name was Barney. He was our first reptile and I quickly grew very attached to the little guy. We bought him from a pet store three months ago and he never seemed to eat very well once we got him home and began losing weight. As you can see from the pictures from a week ago, his tail was very skinny; he was only weighing 30 grams. We tried large crickets, small crickets, mealies, and wax worms; we dusted with both calcium and vitamin powder and even in Barney's last days resorted to feeding him watered down chicken and beef baby food from a syringe. I think the temps in his vivarium were correct, using overhead dome light one for day and one for night and also a reptile heating pad. We took him to a herp vet twice (expensive!) and was treating him for his second round of fluke parasites with panacur. I noticed his head looked very sunken in yesterday and were on our way to the vet when he finally gave up. My kids are absolutely devastated so the pet store (who knew Barney very well since he lived there 1.5 years) offered us a juvenile leo. Once the kids get home from school today we will lay Barney to rest. I hope my future messages with the new leo are happier ones.

Re: Sad today

I'm so sorry to hear that. It's sad that Barney, and your family, had to go through all of that.

Welcome, and I hope things go better for you with your next leo.

Have you seen our leopard gecko caresheet? http://reptileguides.herpcenter.com/...122.html?t=122
It's very good.

Re: Sad today

I am so sorry to hear this!

His fecal turned up flukes? That is a little strange. Did the vet tell you how he came down with those? I a only asking because I had this very same issue with a giant sulcata I have a few months back, In the research I found on flukes it states that aquatic snails are the carrier of those. Which would have made sense with my tort, as we had a mishap with our pond and some of the snails escaped and he obviously ate them. I guess I will have to do a little more research,, or maybe someone here can enlighten me a little.

Once again I am so sorry for your loss!
