croc skink meets untimely demise

Our female croc skink died while I was away for christmas. She never layed her egg, which was very overdue this time but wasn't when we left. She was eggbound, obviously, and heavily bruised in the abdomen (internal bleeding). Something could have been done if the caregiver apointee had something called "Critical thinking skills" or the basic art of "obvious observation". We even had to call in another person to confirm that she was dead because the caregiver is so dense (we didn't know she was THAT bad, she was so good on the weekends we left her for). It wasn't her fault, I think this species is a good candidate for being eggbound: Narrow pelvis + oversized egg = bad news. As for environment, we've eliminated that because we copied exactly the Dallas Zoo's super successful breeding program for this species.

'Twas a biological thing. Very sad, the male isn't eating right now. Poor little feller. It's just frustrating that we could have fought it by taking her to a vet had the caregiver payed attention.

Mike and I are going to try to get the UofA to do some Xrays, but I bet that won't pan out. At the very least, we're gonna fromaldehyde her and autopsy ourselves to see what happened.
