MP3s vs. CDs

My husband and I were in the basement and realized we have not touched our stack of 200+ CDs in over a year. I would grab a few every once and a while when I got tired of what was on my ipod and import it, but then it would go right back on the shelf.

We have decided to import everything and anything we have, and take the whole lot to Record and Tape traders and sell them. They dish out cash for them, or if you want, they give you 20% more value if you take it in store credit. We are going to do store credit and get movies and video games and music we have wanted and not bought yet since they sells all that stuff too.

Just to be safe I'm going to backup the entire collection (once finished) on an external hard drive, so if for some horrible reason my computer crashes I don't lose the entire collection. That would be horrible.

Re: MP3s vs. CDs

I really need to buy an MP3 player, I feel the only person left on this planet who totes around a big clunky cd player for working outside and mopping and stuff at work.

Re: MP3s vs. CDs

I know this sounds weird, but I really think that MP3s actually lose just a little something from the song as opposed to the CDs you'd buy from that artist. There's just something about the way the speakers distribute certain portions of the songs. Teeny little things, but I'm kind of a stickler.

That said, I do have most of my music imported onto my computers so that I can listen to it while I work and still be able to use the CD drives. I still think the quality isn't quite as good, though.

Re: MP3s vs. CDs

I'm tone deaf as they come I don't even notice quality loss, granted I don't think I can properly appreciate most music, so that's the trade off.

Merlin- I'm surprised you aren't still holding out on the resurrection of the 8-track player

Re: MP3s vs. CDs

Typh is correct, if you import them as MP3s then you do lose some quality. MP4s do a slightly better job (which is actually how mine are getting imported) but if you want true sound, you copy the actual sound file and don't compress it. It takes up 4 times the space but you don't lose anything.

I like a variety of music, but i'm not a stickler for sound quality.

LOL! Not quite that bad! 8 Tracks are too bulky!
I have from time to time caught myself and my wife refering as "Going to the record store!"
And part of my problem is I am a musician!
Lack of sound quality is a big minus in my book!

my brother is also a musician and refuses to go digital. He's bummed because his tape player in his car finally died.
