Okay, you had me worried for a bit.
Let's clear something up. "Whole prey" has nothing to do with whether or not the prey item has a back bone. "Whole prey" just means that the prey item is being fed in its entirety: brains, heart, lungs, blood, the entire animal. Whole animal+intention of feeding it to another animal=Whole Prey.

I'm not worried about it being "too hot". I'm worried about it being not humid enough.

Just wanted to comment on the growth. I see no reason with proper conditions why this monitor can't achieve full length. While 17 inches at a year old could be considered small that still shows steady growth of a bit under an inch a month. I predict growth rate will increase over the next few months. Three to four feet should be realistic.

Hi again, would you consider making the enclosure in two parts?
The base would be a plastic or metal trough @ 6L x 3W x 2H (feet), filled with substrate, then build a wooden top with the sliding glass front to fit on top @ approx 6.5L x 3.5W x 2H (ft). That way, it would be relatively easy to construct the top outdoors, and still get it inside.

to seal your plywood I would follow the "drylockt" suggestion, but would also wrap the "soil holding section" in 20ml rubber shower pan material. Your plywood is going to be in constant contact with wet, warm soil. You need to protect it the best you can. Even pressure treated wood rots in the right circumstances- I would definately wrap the bottom.
