    Sav Not Burrowing

My sav doesn't burrow, she never has. The substrate is deep enough but she prefers her hot spot. Any thoughts? The substrate is sand clay and topsoil with some leaf litter.

Start a burrow with your hand.

Measure the temps of your dirt, if the dirt is too cold, you will need to warm up the room to get the dirt at the correct temperature.

Hi, I agree with Wayne. Also, how deep is the substrate?

This. And also, what is the humidity level like? When you build a burrow, how difficult is it for you? Does it hold? What are the overall temps of the enclosure? Humidity?
Let's clear something up. "Whole prey" has nothing to do with whether or not the prey item has a back bone. "Whole prey" just means that the prey item is being fed in its entirety: brains, heart, lungs, blood, the entire animal. Whole animal+intention of feeding it to another animal=Whole Prey.

Now here is your problem, basking site is not hot enough or you cage is too cool.If your cage is too cool your monitor will not burrow. All so the clay is not a good choice for a substrait, most monitors won't use it.But your bigger problem is why is he sayings on the hotter end of the cage?If you could a few pictures of his St up with a discription of how you have it set up

Clay is not good for the soil anyway, besides the fact it can build up on the nails of the animal, it doesnt allow the substrate to breath and prevents water penetration.

The substrate is not only clay, it is playsand, topsoil, and clay. The ratio is probably 40/40/20.

The substrait can not breath with clay in it

I remixed her substrate and added some moisture, when I went to feed her this morning and she had made herself a burrow. I took some of your advice and started the hole for her and she took it from there.
