New Dums

My pair of Dumeriliis doesn't seem to be working out as my female dose not pert-icily like my male.So I had been thinking of trying another pair and trying to mix match them and see if I can get a working pair.Now I am a little disappointed.When I talked to the place I got them from,they said they where 18-24 inches and where juvenile.But when I received them they where a lot smaller than I thought.The bigger of the two was also dehydrated and had sever nose rub.I was a little shocked as I have dealt with this place before and they are pretty good,so I don't want to mention there name because like I said they are normally pretty good.


The main problem is that I have an 8 foot cage and the biggest is only a small 16 inches and the smaller of the two is still a baby,so I had to scramble at the last minute to get a make shift enclosure.But other than that the smaller one was in great shape and doing ok.The bigger one will need a little tlc but should be fin as well

Hi Greg,
they`re possibly quite recent imports, looking at the body condition. The snout rub looks quite clean from what I can see?
Now they`re in proper conditions it should heal o.k, the scales won`t regrow, but the area should darken over the next few months or so.
They`ve lost the hatchling colouration, so they are juveniles, the hatchings are around 20+cm (8 to 9inches ToL).
I wish you all the best with them, and I hope they grow as big and strong as your other two.
Your son`s looking great, still got daddy`s hairstyle, but hopefully that will improve in time... ;)

Hey Greg! Nice to see you posting! Good luck with this pair hopefully something comes out of the 4! All and all I don't think they look bad.

Being you are a repeat customer of them are they going to help you out any for the damaged goods? If it were me I wouldnt want to send it back but I would definitely have some complaints I would be sharing with them. Maybe a partial refund or something.

On the human, its a pretty good looking one too! lol Bright eyed and great smile!

The skinny one looks skinny from dehydration.In most cases new monitor owners get a new monitor and think its skinny when in fact it is suffering from dehydration.You did a great post on the long term effects of chronic dehydration.And in my opinion its the biggest problem in keeping monitors.

Stefan,yes you are right they are more than likely fresh imports and that is why the bigger of the two looks like it dose and like I said with a little tlc they should be fine.


Randy thanks I do think I will get some luck with these two as I think they are both female(for now monitors have a way of looking female than all of a sudden one day they become male)I did complain to the place I got them from and I do not want to send them back,I was just shocked because they are one of the best places to buy reptiles from on the east coast

In a case like yours, would you suggest electrolytes?

I made my observation on the base of it's tail, usually the very base of the tail is quite thick.
