Re: Millipedes

Cockroaches would be the way to go. I can't remember the last time I bought bugs for my monitors. They breed quite easily. Takes about 4-6 months to get a good colony going depending on how many you start with.

Re: Millipedes

I need to start breeding insects..a few roaches doesn't phase me..a colony I don't know hah. Is there a big process into breeding crickets? I'm using those as my main source of food. He doesn't like mealworms I have to trick him into eating em so i'm done with those. Havent tried super worms or wax worms...he loves roaches, i'm just going to have to purchase those, don't want a colony of those ha. so key ways to start breeding crickets?

Re: Millipedes

And crickets JUMP! If you've ever had a few crickets escape, you know what a pain that is! Beware if anything happens and your colony gets control of your house! Bleh! I think I'd prefer breeding roaches really, less smell, no jumping!

Re: Millipedes

Most people I have spoken with, who have bred both crickets and roaches, prefer the roaches by far. They don't climb, fly, stink, chirp, etc.

But with most people, when you say "cockroach" they think of the invasive, disgusting, German cockroach that is found in households worldwide, and can spread hundreds of diseases.... THOSE are indeed disgusting, and most people go to great lengths to prevent those things from ever breeding in their homes.

Most commercially available roaches are a different story altogether (though I have seen one website selling german cockroaches...)

Re: Millipedes

In general, we advise against the feeding of wild bugs, as many can carry pesticide residue that you don't want your pet eating. Very few animals will eat a box elder bug - if I recall correctly, they smell bad when injured or killed, and that would be a bit of a deterrent. Overall, they are considered a pest. so if they are having a population increase (which is common) there is a good chance someone has at least attempted to spray them with insecticides, and since they fly, they can carry it around.
