6 Feet 120 Lb. Black Throat Monitor!!!!!

Hey guys, as I was browsing the next I happened upon a story about black throat monitors.
Most adult black throats that I have personally seen in person were between the ages of 2-6 and they ranged from 4-6 feet with weights of 22-47 lbs.
The largest I have seen was a 6' male that was over 4 years old and weighed in at 49 lbs. However, I have been told of a monster black throat that is 15 years old and is 6' tipping the scales at a massive 120 lbs.!!!!!!!!!!!!

Now I know this sounds far fetched, but there is actually a photo accompanying the animal. The owner of the animal has even stated (in another forum) that his animal is 15+ years old and is just over 6' long topping at 120+ lbs. "When black throat monitors are kept in perfect conditions and fed properly, they will reach their full potential."

Now I know that black throats are big, but I didn't think they can top above 50 lbs.

With out being extremely over weight? A cat can be like 35 lbs but almost round. Its not a good condition.

That's because it is far fetched.

A six foot Komodo dragon would weigh less than 120lbs. A blackthroat isn't going to weigh that much at 6 feet unless it is square.

There are people who try to go for "records" of having the largest animal (monitors or any other) in the world, their animals are just morbidly obese, personally, I don`t think these owners care too much about the animals, just the publicity they get from showing them off!

You can see some of these monitors on youtube.... (Just type in "largest monitors"). Also, R.G. Sprackland in his book "Giant Lizards" (1992) is shown holding his "friend" a 7.5 ft. V. salvator weighing 130lbs.
I would think the monitor would have difficulty even walking, but Sprackland looks as if he`s quite pleased to be pictured with the monitor. Anyone can have a slightly overweight animal, (particularly varanids) but some people deliberately take it to extremes, very bad for the animal`s long-term health...

I think if there was a black throat at 7 feet, 50lbs would be a reasonable weight, they are quite heavy bodied, particularly the large males, they are usually quoted as reaching 6 ft. but in captivity many animals grow larger than their wild counterparts... I try to stay away from youtube, unless it is someone I know is creditable.(Jesse,David,Roger,or Mark)Most of the stuff you see on youtube is complete ****,and most new monitor keeper use it as gospel.I cant stand to look at a 2 foot Savanna in a 55 gallon fish tank with newspaper bedding and a screen top. They all claim they are the next reptile whisper.

I agree, but the "monster monitors" are there, as I said, it`s just the owners looking for some publicity, nothing to do with caring for the animals properly!
