Couple Ackies

Heres what I'm still hoping is a pair. While I still have my fingers crossed, I'm no longer holding my breathe.

These guys were hatched out in late October/early November. I could only acquire two, so I knew I was gambling for a pair. I was hoping to get lucky, because I have another breeding project that I wanted to get started. I told myself I would wait to see if I had a pair of ackies before I started the other project (Carpet Chameleons). Now, I'm starting to get antsy

Anybody want to take a stab at the sexes?

Re: Couple Ackies

I`ve just asked for photos, and here they are!! As you know, it`s VERY difficult to sex varanids, but there`s a relatively "new" technique, similar to "candling" eggs, to see if they`re fertile... Take a strong flashlight, shine on the base of the tail, (vent), you should be able to see the paired hemipenes of the males, it`s been successful on a number of the pygmy monitors, and being non-invasive, is an excellent way to do it...Certainly worth a try!

Re: Couple Ackies

I've read about in Biawak. I don't have a light strong enough that isn't too wide that it blinds me in the process For some reason, whenever I'm in a store I can't remember to buy one......or maybe I'm just afraid of the results

Re: Couple Ackies

If you`re afraid of the results, I think you may well have problems ....I`m not sure if it`s just the photo, but the animal at the top of the pic looks to have a wider head, or am I seeing things? try getting a total length measurement, if it`s quite close, then see if there`s a significant difference in head meas..

Re: Couple Ackies

The top ackie is around two inches longer and more massive. The top ones head is more massive, but its pretty much the same shape as the bottom ackies.

I've stared at the bottom ackies vent while it was pooping on several occasions, but didn't see anything pop out. I've never seen the top ackie poop

Re: Couple Ackies

I`ll make a small bet that they ARE male and female, if I`m wrong, my best friend Katt, (titoandkatt) will pay you.... She LOVES paying my gambling debts off, ( I lose sooo many times)....
The top monitor certainly LOOKS much "heavier"...( I don`t mean overweight!)

Re: Couple Ackies

Tape off your flashlight lens so you have the appropriate size opening directly above the bulb.

Re: Couple Ackies

Those are a pair of attractive ackies, indeed. I'll bet they look quite nice when they are clean.

The Brown sexing method works quite well, I've even tried it successfully on a 31" Savannah monitor.

Re: Couple Ackies

I've read that the lenght of a male will be 50% Body, 50% tail. A females body is longer as compared to the tail to have room to accommodate eggs.

Re: Couple Ackies

As silentjt suggested, tape works to cover a light if you want to try that method. I've tried it with a strong LED light and gaffer tape. Although the setup worked fine, the particular animals I was trying it on (lace monitor hatchlings) have a black band right across the base of the tail that's too opaque even at that age.
