What is the Best Subtrate for a Savannah Monitor?

What is the best substrate for a Savannah Monitor?

I am going to put him on carpet for now. I figure that is the safest choice until I am 100% sure that the substrate I put in there isn't going to hurt him.

Or is there no 100% guarantee?

    How old is your Sav?
Here is a quote from the book "The Savannah Monitor Lizard" by Daniel Bennett and Ravi Thakoordyal. I highly recommend you purchase this book.

Can I keep my monitor on newspaper?
Please don't. Hard floorings such as newspaper should be avoided whenever possible. They are awkward for the animals to walk on, deprive them the pleasure of digging and make it difficult to maintain the proper level of humidity in the enclosure. Other substrates to avoid are astroturf and carpeting, in fact anything the animals cannot dig up. There is really no substitute for a deep bed of substrate.

As for the guarantee part. Substrate is just one part of husbandry. All parts need to be correct in order to give them a healthy life.
A good substrate is a mix of sand and soil. With the enclosure mostly sealed up, it will hold humidity in. With the humidity at a moderate level of 60-70 percent the intestines of the Sav will maintain their elastic abilities. Any substrate that is consumed will be passed.
The danger of not keeping the air humid is the reverse. They will lose their ability to stretch and impaction is a danger.

I thought I should use cage carpet, but was always wondering about the digging instinct. How deep should it be? If I can't get the sand/soil, what else can I use?

Three to four inches of substrate will suffice their need to dig. They will be able to make their way under branches and what not. Avoid the use of heavy rocks though that could pin them.
Use as much depth as you can if you have a large enclosure and they will make use of it.

Sand and soil is easy to find. A big box store like Home Depot or Lowes will carry potting soil (make sure it's fertilizer free) and childrens playsand.

Re: What is the Best Subtrate for a Savannah Monit

Just from my own experience. My Sav is a terrible hunter when it comes to eating. And for a while I had him on a sand substrate and he did become impacted because while he was hinting he would eat more of the substrate than his food. So I decided to use the cage carpet so he could not digest it. As of now he is more healthy and has not show any signs of not enjoying it. One day when he is a better hunter on his food or he will eat from a bowl I will move him to the sand/soil so he can do his natural digging. But I believe eating healthy is more important than digging for now.

I would suspect then that with the carpet your humidity is too low in the environment.

That's too low. It should be around 75 percent.

I would put him on the sand/soil mixture and start feeding him in a large storage tote. This will both give him the humidity he needs and free of impaction risk.

What should the sand-soil ratio be? I'm going to get some tonight or tomorrow.
