Savs Eating?
I've been recording my two baby savs feedings. The larger one is about 6 inches and the smaller one is a little over 4 inches. I take them out and put them into separate containers to feed. The smaller one has eaten crickets. The larger one has eaten hard boiled eggs only once. and I've had them for a week. The smaller one, ate 2 crickets thursday, 3 friday, none saturday, 4 sunday, 3 monday, 5 yesterday and none today. Its starting to worry me that they are not eating. about how many crickets should the 4 inch one be eating?
substrate: soil and mulch mixed, water: bowl refilled every morning, lighting: uva and uvb lighting. temps: 90 gradient 86 cool side 110 basking plenty of hides some moist some dry The top of the substrate is dry most of the day but the layers underneath are moist throughout the whole day. Anything wrong with my husbandry? |

Re: Savs Eating?
Sounds like he's eating alright. He might not want to eat every day. I would drop the cool side though to max 80 deg.

Re: Savs Eating?
Also keep an eye on stools. They should be fairly regular.

Re: Savs Eating?
Just changed the wattage of the bulb on the cool side to make it about 80. Should be right, but I'll double check tomorrow. Stools are regular. They both defecate in the water dish, usually right before lights go out, so I change it first thing in the morning. I'm not really worried about the smaller one thats eating 5/7 days a week. I'm worried about the larger one thats only eaten 2 pieces of egg white in a week. He still looks healthy though. I'm sure they'll start eating if everything's right. Thank you very much. I know your always the guy to go to for monitor questions

Re: Savs Eating?
Thanks but I wouldn't call myself that knowledgeable. I haven't had a Sav in a long time. Just have the Acanthurus now. There are some Sav owners on here though. Hopefully they come around. As long as they look healthy and are active I wouldn't worry too much yet.

Re: Savs Eating?
When you say you are feeding X number of crickets, are they small crickets are large crickets? They should be on small crickets for now.

Re: Savs Eating?
Yea small crickets. but they both haven't been eating for about 3 days now. I've been trying everything, hard boiled eggs, mealworms, crickets, silkworms even my fingers
lol. I'm going to leave them alone until monday which will be their 10th day in my care. They seem to be getting used to everything, they are moving around now, exploring everything. I just reallly hope they start to eat. Even though they haven't eaten at all in 3 days somehow I still find feces in the water dish everyday. |

Re: Savs Eating?
Have the had a vet check up yet?
Always a good idea for imported animals to get checked for worms and such. Which most Savs are.

Re: Savs Eating?
I have an appt June 12th for my chams and uros, so I'm gonna call and tell them im bringing my savs. I just hope they're fine and they start to eat. Hopefully giving them alone time will help them settle and make them feel comfortable enough to eat.

Re: Savs Eating?
This morning, I saw my little guys weren't out playing around in the light. I look under the hide. I see them both sitting there not breathing or moving at all. I thought they were both just sleeping. So I pick them up to get eyes open, and they had passed. I'm feeling it's a parasitic death (no eating, lethargic) I feel horrible but I tried everything I could to get them to adjust and eat. ![]() That's what you get with wild caught animals I guess. |
