Strange Savannah Monitor Behavior
My boyfriend's Savannah monitor has been acting strange lately. We put him on the floor and he stands up as if he wants to go walking. He starts to walk around. Then my boyfriend starts to pet his head and places his hand on his back. Then the monitor looks up and starts to stick his tongue out and looks at my boyfriend. (Up until this point, he appeared lazy, almost sleepy) then my boyfriend took his hand off and backed away and he noticed that the monitor's tail was raised with his hind legs off the ground almost as if presenting. After seeing this my boyfriend pushed his hips down and just below his tail base. and then he put his head down and looked almost sad. what does this mean? (by the way, we've determined by his everted...thingie...that he's definitely a male. see above posted picture)

Re: Strange Savannah Monitor Behavior
Not positive but sounds like male attitude.

Re: Strange Savannah Monitor Behavior
Maybe you are misreading the signals he's sending you. The only times my sav stands up is when he thinks I've got some food for him. When they start flicking their tongue out, It usually means that they are smelling for food. I believe they can recognize the smell of the owners too.
The lazy, sleepy look thing is a stress response. It says: If I just lay here like a rock, They will eventually get bored with me and leave me alone. It's my opinion that they don't like being walked. These are territorial animals that like to keep close to the burrow and grab food as it comes by. When I take mine out, I use the hip leash and I carry him everywhere we go. I figure as long as he can smell me, He feels safe to some extent. I let him sun on the dash when I take him for a short drive down to the pet store to show him off from time to time. Once you get them out of their usual surroundings for a while, They can become as if they are in a trance state.(i.e. the sleepiness they seem to have)
