New Savannah Monitors

I just picked up my baby savs yesterday. I let them into their new habitat, they are very calm and not too jumpy. Which I'm very happy about. The one problem is ones not eating a lot. It went after the crickets and caught maybe 3 out of 12. Is it common for them to not eat when adjusting to their new home? He just seems not very interested in the crickets. Should I be concerned, or just give it time to settle into its new home?

Re: New Savannah Monitors

All animals need to adjust to their new habitats, it usually takes several days. If they are in the same cage make sure one is not dominating the other. You may want to try feeding them seperately. Give them time to adjust.

Re: New Savannah Monitors

Congrats on the new monitors. Best start planning for a huge enclosure.
Pardon me if I've already given you this advice.
I highly recommend a book on Savs written by Daniel Bennett and Ravi Thakoordyal. It is a must have tool for Sav owners. There is far too much inaccurate advice on the internet about their husbandry.

Re: New Savannah Monitors

yea I'm going to order the book right away. I had taken the two smaller ones, out of the 3 in the tank at the reptile store. The larger one was very dominating and would hiss at one of the ones I had taken. I didn't want to have an injury by housing that monitor with any others. I had already started to build a 8 by 4 cage, they should be good in the 50 gallon for at least 4 months though if my research is correct. I'm going to make the cage to meet every single one of their needs in the meantime. But I see no dominance issues between the two I have. I just hope they start eating! hah I guess I'm a worried newbie! Thank you all!

Re: New Savannah Monitors

Glad to hear that you're doing some extensive research from different avenues. Savannahs are still a hugely imported animal. Mostly because of their high mortality rate under the age of two. That's because of improper housing.

Re: New Savannah Monitors

Yea, I understand thats why I will be doing everything that I can to make sure that everything is perfect in their enclosures. For the past 2 weeks all I've been doing is coming home and reading care sheets. I'm not an impulse buyer when it comes to reptiles. I make sure I can meet the requirements of these wonderful animals.

Re: New Savannah Monitors

The general rule for enclosure space is 2x the body length by 1 times the body length. I personally wouldn't build a 4' X 8' enclosure until they are ready for it. That's a lot of space for babies and they might not be able to find their food unless you put tons of crickets in there and that would pose a whole new problem with dead crickets and cricket stench.
I started with a ten gallon tank, then a 20, then a 40. These are reptile tanks I'm talking about not fish tanks. Fish tanks tend to be taller and narrower.
I just got finished building his new enclosure which is 5 feet X 3 feet. My animal is about 2 feet long at the present. He is 15 months old.
Oh, and another thing. When I first got my sav as a hatchling, I had to feed him one cricket at a time for the first couple of weeks to a month. If I put more than one in, He would start going after one cricket then before he could get it, he would see another cricket and start going after that one. And then he would see still another one and then he would just stop like his brain just got overloaded. Crickets would crawl over his head and he would do nothing until I took them out and let his brain reset. It was actually kind of funny.

Re: New Savannah Monitors

I'm so jealous!

I'm sure you will do well with them. It's great that you are doing the research.

Thank you very much! that is EXACTLY what I was talking about when I said they didnt seem interested in the food. one cricket at a time for me now lol. and they are about a month old, and they are in a 50 gallon tank. the 8 by 4 would be very big for juvies. i know but ive started to build it already. so i'll have it when the times up. i have a 4x3x3 I made about a year ago for my mali uromastyx that I JUST got this year when I had a better tank for them anyways. i think ill take a look at that and see if I can fix it up for them when they're too big for the 50 gallon and too small for the 8 by 4.
