A Little Worried
Monday I bought a medium mouse for my ball. It was live but I PK'ed it before feeding time. My ball didn't eat it. So here I am with this dead rat. I go to throw it away and I get this crazy idea. (It's late at this point) I thought I would toss it into my sav cage and let him wrestle with it for a while. I was thinking it would give him a little exercise and I would have to come back and remove it and maybe give him some tuna so he woulnd't feel robbed of his meal. To my amazement, He ate the whole thing! No blood, No guts. It seems he swallowed it whole! He looked like Jabba the Hut! I came home from work today and he hardly moved when I approached his tank. Usually he is jumping up and down with the "Feed Me" dance. I figured he needed a warm bath. When I picked him up he actually belched! He's never done that before and I'm glad my nose wasn't there to smell it! While soaking, He had a bowel movement and seemed more animated afterwards. I'm just worried about him having such a big meal. When I picked him up his skin felt like it was stretched. It felt like picking up a football. Needless to say he has eaten for the week! Right now he is about 22 inches including the tail. That rat was about 5 inches without the tail. His usual meal is an adult mouse. The pics are after feeding the rat. |

Re: A Little Worried
Oh my...I'm not sure what to say..I hope he will digest it and will be ok. Maybe up his heat a bit to aid in better digestion.

Re: A Little Worried
I'm not realy that suprised he ate the whole thing, you ever watch a komodo Dragon(which is another monitor) go to town on a cow? I don't know where they put it... i think bumping up the heat should help, also maybe find ways to keep him active, you don't want all of that rat turning to fat. I'd definitly keep a close eye on him though. I hope he does ok.

Re: A Little Worried
Yikes, yeah he looks like a football!
In the past when Zola (Bearded Dragon) has eaten a huge meal he spends a couple of days lazing around and digesting. Think about how you feel after thanksgiving dinner. I know I want to put on sweats and veg out!

Re: A Little Worried
Large meals are actually the food of choice for monitors. It requires less energy to hunt one down then it does to hunt down many small meals. I read a paper that it's actually healthier as well, for them to eat a large meal every 3 days then it is to eat every day. It causes them to retain more bodyfat.

Re: A Little Worried
What was that old commercial,...
"I can't beleive I ate the whole thing!" ![]() As long as he doesn't seem to be in any distress I wouldn't worry about it too much. Just don't make it a habit or you may end up with a basketball with legs and a tail! ![]()
