Enclosure for a Savannah monitor
I May be purchasing a 75 gallon reptile tank at a price thats a bit too good to pass up. I wanted everyone's opinion on, down the road, would a 75 gallon reptile tank be enough space for a Savannah monitor. One of the reptile's I want is a savannah monitor(though it will be quite a few months till I were to purchase it), and I have seen one housed in a similiar tank, just wanted a bit more advice then the caresheets give.

Re: Enclosure for a Savannah monitor
Yes it will be enough space,...while its a hatchling!
You are looking at a lizard that is going to be 3.5-4ft long and quite powerful. As an adult it will require a cage about 4ft x 8ft x 3ft!
An aquarium really isn't going to work.

Re: Enclosure for a Savannah monitor
you should turn that 75 gallon into an upright frog tank

Re: Enclosure for a Savannah monitor
Thanks, i've seen it done, but that sav was a rescue, so its growth had probaly been stunted by miscare beforehand. It would be a cool idea for a frog tank, whats the best way of going about that?

Re: Enclosure for a Savannah monitor
It will do for a few months. but you should really look for a bigger one or make an enclosure yourself while you wait for it to out grow the 75.

Don't assume stunted growth! When You start feeding it what it should have been getting all along, He might just more than make up for lost time! Mine has gone from 6 inches to 2 Feet in less than a year!

Re: Enclosure for a Savannah monitor
My daughters Sav was the victim of neglect and the wrong types of food, heat and lighting. We have had him over a year, and he is finally just beginning to grow now. He was about 8 months old when we got him, and only about 8 inches long. He is also blind in one eye, and missing about an inch or so of his tail. The guy at the pet store thought there were 2 in the cage, but one had gone "missing". We had to take him home, we couldn't leave him in that shape, the vet said if we hadn't taken him he would have died in a few more weeks. The store considered him extremely mean and aggressive, but when we held him and talked to him, he quieted down nicely. He does have a few problems from being blind in the one eye (he tends to strike out if you approach from that side), but over all is doing great, and is now beginning to be ready for a bigger cage.

Re: Enclosure for a Savannah monitor
The Monitor I beleive may have had its growth stunted was over 10 years old when my friend that had it got it, it was less than a foot and a half long, signifigantly smaller than it should of been. It was given a tank about five feet by three feet, maybe two feet tall. it never got any bigger.
I still may get the 75, but I won't use it as a temp savvanah monitor enclosure, sounds like it won't last long enough to even be worth it. guess i'll have to wait till I have the space for a custom enclosure.

Re: Enclosure for a Savannah monitor
I'm actualy tempted to put my Schneider Skink in the 75, maybe move my gecko over to the 20 long, though I think when I expand the gecko's cage i'll expand upwards.
