tree monitors

I have a black tree monitor and a emerald tree monitor that stay in the same cage and they get along GREAT. I was told that you shouldnt keep them togather but they just seem to get along to well to seperate them. they sleep in the same cave even when there are plenty of other hiding places. they are both under 1 foot. Its kinda funny to watch them because one is dark grey and the other is green. My question is could I be able to keep them in the same cage when they reach adulthood?

Re: tree monitors

I don't have any experiences with the tree monitor species. Although I'd really like to someday. From what I know about them they are secretive nervous creatures, that are easily stressed. They probably enjoy the company of a cagemate when younger but I' be prepared to separate them as they mature. Do they have the same care requirements?

Re: tree monitors

Black and Emerald tree monitors seem to be very close relatives. Their living conditions are identical. The Black tree monitor is from the Aru islands, FNG while the Emerald is from the mainland. I haven't read the offical papers on these monitors but from the reading I've done it could be a simple color and geographic differences that make them separate species.

The only problem I could see is cross breeding if you should end up with a pair. I would find it unlikely that they would mate with another but being so closely related theres a possibility. So unless theres issues with them fighting I would say it would be safe keeping them together.

Re: tree monitors

I would watch very carefully for signs of stress or fighting from either party. Set up a 2nd cage just in case so that if you end up with a injured monitor you don't have to run around in a panic to set up a separate living space.

Watch to make sure that both eat there fill, and I would probably set up multiple hides and a couple of basking and feeding spots so that they can each have their own space, remember it will take a huge cage to allow them their privacy once they are adults.

Re: tree monitors

they dont fight at all infact its the exact opposite I have tall trees set up in my basement so there always hanging out togather in those. my whole basement is there cage so they will have more then enough room but even with all the extra hiding and basking spots they dont seperate unless there on the ground which isnt very often. Also the black one will eat anything that moves especially gold fish but the green one will only eat crickets and nothing else will he have a more of a variety when he gets older? i guess all my questions are up to the monitor individually but just if anybody had similar situations.
