Varanus salvator cumingi...

here are a couple pics of our Cumingi water monitors. we have 6 currently, but occassionally get new individuals in as rescues who were confiscated by DENR, the wildlife division of the philippine government. whenever smuggled reptiles are confiscated in the philippines, DENR asks Herpaworld to take them in. many people have managed to smuggle this species out of the philippines in the past so they are around the USA and Europe a little bit. none of those animals around the world came from legal sources so none have any papers, which they should have because they are CITES animals and most are still wild-caught specimens.
all of our animals right now are juvenile or young adults so we dont have any to breed right now but will be working on captive breeding in the future. they are a beautiful salvator species, with all of their lighter colors being bright yellow, not white and they can grow to more than 7' long. most of ours are quite aggressive because we dont handle them much at all. we feed them chopped up chicken mixed with egg normally but sometimes they get rats or chicks. they are hearty eaters normally and make an amazing mess.

Welcome to HC!
Those are beautiful animals. (My favorites of lizard species.)
I'm glad that there is a place that will rescue them from illegal collecting. Good luck in your efforts to breed them.

We have a Varanus at our local zoo here in Switzerland (Basel Zoo).
I'm not sure what type it is but it is BIG and looks similar to yours:

Is that the same? Here's a close-up of the head:

I hope our zoo obtained it legally! It's been there for ages. They used to have a female, but when she laid eggs, he ate them and the battle that ensued was quite nasty. She did not survive and he had to be stitched up in a few places.

Re: Varanus salvator cumingi...

Hi There, I just joined the forum.

Always nice to see cumingi.

where abouts are you ? are you in the Philippines?

Your animals look very similar to the wild animals that I have seen in Europe and also the ones that appear on the US classifieds.

The one at Basel zoo, I believe came from Frankfurt - I also keep frankfurt zoo bred animals - my oldest comes from the original breeding in 1996 - photo attached.

At 10 years old he is 175cm.

I currently have 2 male animals and 2 females - one of which is currently gravid, although has previously laid 5 clutches of infertile eggs.

I also have valid CITES paperwork for my animals - I am unaware of another private keeper that does.
