do they get darker as they grow or is that just the lighting making them different shades?

Well both DarkMagician. The lighting had some effect but not much.

As they age, the white/cream colored bands tend to get more and more flecks of black. Same with the red.

If you look closely in the 3rd photograph you can see black in between each red scale, notice how the babies don't have that?

So yes, they do get darker, but not much. Speaking this sub species only.
