I would say if it is in a classroom, I would go with either leopard geckos, bearded dragons or maybe a corn snake, if he is somewhat experienced he could with a ball python. Once school is over is your friend willing to take the animal home with him for the summer?

I've seen corns go over very well in classrooms.

there is already a 3' corn in his room, he got it from another teacher's daughter, and yes he is willing to take them home for summer. I think he was looking for ease of handling and care and along the lines of lizards.
I talked with another herp enthusiast, and he mentioned prehensile tailed skinks, or even emperor scorpions along with the Leopard Geckos, BDs. How do you think a Water Dragon would do in a classroom environment?, the guy seemed pretty interested in my own set-up. Lizardpoo |

You might be on to something with the water dragon. They'd certainly love all the attention.

I really dont think a water dragon would be an ideal classroom pet, they are a little more high maintanence than most lizards. I believe water dragons prefer more height than a 55 gallon can provide.

Since there is already a cornsnake on the premises I would recommend a bearded dragon. Leopard Geckos being nocturnal aren't going to be that much fun in a day time class, Same with ball pythons. You want something that will be up and moving around in the daytime when the kids are there.
I am afraid that a water dragon, aside from being higher maintenace will be driven psyco with all the activity going on around him.

One of the room at my boys school has a montage of reptiles etc. But the teacher has been doing this for 12 or more year. A Ball python, 2 rat snakes, 1 11 year old Bearded Dragon, 1 juvenal Iguana, tree frogs, 1 tarantula, a Michigan pond with turtles, clams etc from the region, I'm sure I'm missing something....
I've talked my principal into letting the Bearded Dragons come and visit my library. Of course the students want me to bring them all in for a visit, we'll see.. I'm going to work on some tree frogs for next year. |
