Horned Lizards

Hello all, we just picked up 2 Horned Lizards from the pet store that we have been interested in for awhile. I'm almost certain they are Coast Horned Lizards, although I'm not an expert on identifying. Ive been reading non stop on these things for a few hours now, and tomorrow we have to head into town to pick up a UVB bulb, we live in the mountains, so our local pet store is limited.

As for food, is Harvester Ants the only type of ants they can eat? I've been to a few sites that sell the harvester ants, so I will have to order some. What would be okay to feed them until the ants arrive? And how should the ants be kept until being fed to the lizards? I read something about keeping them in the refridgerator? And about how many should the lizards eat per day? Their size is about 3 inches from head to vent (i think thats what its called) for one, and the other is about 3 1/2 to 4 inches. I'll post some pics of them.

Is a UVA bulb good for anything? and how often should UVB or UVA lighting be kept on during the day and/or night? Also, do they need any special lighting at night? I think perhaps in the winter they will need a light at night for warmth, as it does snow here and gets quite cold. I'm not sure how that will effect their environment, as we have the heater on in the house almost non stop in winter to keep ourselves warm.

Any information would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance!

Here's some pictures, theyre bad quality, ill try to take better ones tomorrow during the day. Oh, also, is there any way to tell if theyre male or female?

Re: Horned Lizards

I don't know anything about the Horned Lizards, but as far as the ants go, I would think you could treat them almost the same as crickets in relationship to what to feed them and what all. I would say to gut load them with veggies so that you know they have healthy food in their stomachs before feeding to your lizard. And I would give a few at a time to the lizard until he stops eating....

Re: Horned Lizards

For your heat issue at night, look into an under the tank heater or a ceramic heat emitter. Its very important for herps to have a 12 hours of light and 12 hours of night schedule.
