I've come upon a tactic that works quite well for my Leopard Geckos & AFTs. It may sound a little odd, but the benefits listed below will help make sense of it.
My daughter has something called "Sleepy Head Fred" (the girl in the pic is not my daughter):
It is a bean bag sort of thing that, indeed, is filled with medium-sized, dry beans, which are particularly good at retaining heat. Fred is intended to be heated in the microwave before the child goes to bed, the the warmth it generates helps the child fall asleep.
As to my geckos, I have been using Fred to carry them around the house with me. Here is a list of Fred's features that are propitious fpr carrying geckos:
1.) He is warm and retains heat well, so it feels good to the geckos.
2.) The heat makes them stay in place because it feels better to stay there than to wander around my neck to cooler places.
3.) The beans weight Fred down, so he rests well on my shoulder and doesn't fall off.
4.) The cloth of which he is made is easy for them to grip with their little claws.
5.) Fred is approximately the color of my AFTs, and dark enough for the Leopard Geckos to feel comfortable on it as well.
6.) Here's my favorite: Fred's reverse side has a black pocket into which they can climb, if so desired. The pocket is nice and warm, and the perfect size for the geckos.
The only downside is that, when they're on the little Fred pillow, you can't feel them directly on your skin. This is no problem when I'm standing upright or ambulating, but, when seated, they can crawl off the pillow onto the back of the armchair without my feeling it. This only happened once, and the gecko actually crawled to an equally warm place right under a warm lamp.
Well, these are the reasons that I like sleepy head Fred. If you happen to be interested in buying one, here is the link:
