Collared Lizards

I have read the caresheet on Collared Lizards. They seem pretty interesting. I do have a question though. I am not good with measurements but is a 40 gallon wide a good tank size? Also since the lizards get pretty big would you want a large bowl of water or small? Also I have only had my leopard for about 2 months do you think if I got a collared lizard that it would be difficult for a newbie or not?

A 40 gl breeder or even larger tank would work, these guys get pretty long. I would suggest a small bowl of water, sometimes they drink, most times get their water from their food sources. I dont think they are difficult to care for, it all depends of the indiviual person as to whether they are ready . If you do all your research, its up to you to decide if your ready, lol.

I loved our collards when we had them, they were easy going and liked to be handled. I would get a couple more of them but haven't been able to find them locally. Maybe someday!

I don't find my Collared Lizard hard to care for. I don't actually leave water in the tank full time. I offer a small bowl every couple of days. If he's thirsty, he drinks, if not, I remove the water. 40 gallons is a good size for a collared lizard.

To get it hot in one area, a basking spot, you use a heat lamp. Most set it up so theres a branch to climb on so they can get up a bit and lay one the log to bask in the heat. Sorta like a Bearded Dragon.

I avoid that if at all possible. If not, I use microwave heat packs wrapped in towels placed inside a good insulated cooler. Obviously, you shouldn't heat the packs so hot they injure your animal...

How are you transporting, from the show? If its from a show make sure your car is warm, and you take a small hand heat pack and a small blanket to cover him. Just to hold the heat in till you get him, make sure there is a laywer blanket over the heat pack.

Try to make sure you get a captive bred one. I've got a wild caught collared and shes never really adjusted...she gets stressed easily and has been prone to infection when shes not under my care. Over all they are a neat lizard though so I would recommend them.
