    I want a gecko

Im very scared of lizards but I must get over that fear sooner or later. Im thinking about buying or adopting (if theres any to adopt) a gecko.
Im not sure what kind of gecko is a good beginner gecko and I personally think geckos are the only kind of Lizard I could trust.Their not as threating as other reptiles. I would want to be able to hold it eventually and I think when I could go off to college I could sneak a gecko into the dorm. I really want a diurnal gecko if there are any but if the best beginner gecko is nocturnal I guess I could deal. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

A crestie might be a good gecko for a dorm, as they don't need heating (generally, as long as your room temps don't get too extreme in either direction -- they like night temps around 65 and highs below 80). They are nocturnal, though. Another good beginner option is a leopard gecko. They do need heat, but it's pretty easily maintained with a Under Tank Heater.

Do think carefully before "sneaking" a reptile into a dorm, though. It would be terrible to get caught and then be in the position of having to rehome your pet.

As far as the lizard phobia goes, I would recommend trying to get over it BEFORE purchasing/adopting a lizard of your own. Just from the perspective of the lizard's best interests...

    Yes

I do agree I think if I could manage to feel one it would help with my fears.
I'm just a visual kind of person if I hold one i'll know for sure if I can handle one or not. I think I want a pretty gecko as well Crested Geckos brown. What color are leopard geckos.

Check out our caresheet on lizards and see which will fit your requirements. Then I would suggest you take the leap and go to a reptile exhibit or sale, at exhibits a lot of times you can hold a reptile to see if you like it or not. Check out kingsnake.com they have a list of show/events.

Just like Leopard Geckos, Crested Geckos come in lots of color variations. If you buy at a reptile show, you'll have a lot more choice, regardless of what kind of lizard you decide to get.

Crested Geckos can be yellow with spots, look like fire patterns or be red. They have LOTS of colors and patters. They aren't just brown.

There are brightly colored day geckos, which are diurnal. However, they are a bit more difficult to keep. They should be offered UVB lighting, which is harder to hide in a dorm room (not to mention the bulbs are expensive). They require fruit and other additives to their diets. They're generally more expensive than many other geckos. They're also amazing escape artists and unlike leopard geckos and crested geckos, they are generally not good for handling.
