Unfertile Eggs - over and over
Alright so I got two Leopard Geckos. Both I purchased when they were a few weeks old about a yeara nd 8 months ago. So, I'm quessing they are around 1 year and 9 months old.
They ahve always lived together and gotten along. I'm not "trying" to breed, but if they did it would be okay. I have stuff and money for the babies. Problem is last year, when she was too young she laid two clutches. Both had two eggs. They were unfertile and very bad looking. This year shes in a good breeding season and is layign clutch after clutch. She has laid 5 now with 2 eggs each and only the second one was fertile! I dont understand. She wants to mate SO bad, but he ignores her. Why is this? She walks up, bites, wags her tail. He licks her and walks to the other side of the cage! I have only caught them mating once. And any other time SHE is on top! It's like he doesn't understand or want to. They get along good, it's just he's like... dumb. *lol* Anyways, the fertile eggs that I did have were at abuot 86-87* with perlite and moist in a deli cup. It's been about 2 months and they are just now starting to mold and it looks as if they have cracked and little and are ozeing at the top a little?! What causes this? I can see she currently has eggs again and will probably lay within a week. What's going on?

Not sure about the male, but this may be for your benifit. I've heard from several sources that male/female pairs kept together all the time will get so involved in breeding that they will actully "forget" to eat.

Hello,
If you want the eggs to be viable, you should seperate them. The desire to breed isn't as strong because he is with her all the time. If they were seperated, and then placed together, his impulses would be much stronger. In relation to the eggs, it could be a humidity issue. If the eggs are molding, and you are now certain they are no good, open them up and see if the leo has developed. It's also possible that the leo pipped through the egg (which would be why it is oozing) but wasn't strong enough to push through. If this is the case, it could be the fluids in the egg causing the mold! |

Thanks to the both of you.
Rich - I know it's said to seperate them while breeding. But I'm not really 'trying' or 'needing' them to. It would just be nice if they did. So if they never do - that's fine. I was just wondering if something is wrong. They live fine together so if my goal isn't breeding, just keep them together? I'm afraid if I seperate for this 'breeding season' they might not have the compatibility they have now, later.

Yeah there is none at all. Except for when she wants to mate. The usal bite action, but he licks, forgives, and walks away.
Thanks! =)
