barfing

Hey

The other day when I came home, I discovered a pile of mealworms. The pile was all brownish colored. I was just wondering what would cause this to happen and is it serious? Also then this morning there was a giant poop exactly where the pile of mealworms had been. The section where these "presents" are being left is not their normal area to leave fecal matter. What is going on? Please help me.

Hello,
If the Leopard Geckos were stuck together and were clearly noticeable in regards to appearance, (meaning they looked like mealies stuck together), it is most likely caused by regurgitation. That is normally a result of eating too fast, eating too many, or improper temperatures. It can also be attributed to parasites.

When the fecal was left, how did it appear? Was it runny, possible foul smelling, or did it appear normal?

Check the temps in the enclosure and make sure they are adequate. If they are ok, prior to this feeding, when was the last time that the leo ate? If the leo eats on a regular schedule, he wouldn't have a reason to eat too many at once though it is possible.

The fecal matter was just a smelly blob of white. It was much larger than normal though. It probably was reguratation because all the mealies were stuck together. My Leopard Geckos had just eaten two day before...like always. The only thing is my leo Pax is not being the best eater for about the past month or more. I have had to force feed her for a while. Her tail has gotten smaller in size also. I don't know if Pax was the one who reguratated or not. If she did it was probably my own fault. Do you know why she would stop eating? Thanks for your help.
Oh...by the way my temps are just fine.

How many mealies are you feeding her? Mealworms can be difficult to digest, and for this reason we don't feed too many to our Leopard Geckos.

How big are the mealworms and how varied is her diet? A staple of crickets is more ideal with the occasional wax worm and meal worm - i think it is very likely that the mealies caused the regurg, best not to feed so many.

If I am correct with the my asumption of who is barfing. She will not eat crickets. Her tail keeps getting smaller and smaller. I'm begining to get worried. The reguratation just has to be making things worse. Whats going on?

If you are really worried, I would take her to see the vets, and if you can take a fecal along with you, keep us posted.

Hello,
The mealworms would not cause the leo to regurgitate.(Unless he over ate of course.) They also wouldn't cause the Leopard Geckos tail to thin out. The stool you described, lack of appetite, and regurge leads me to believe there is a parasite.I would get a fecal to the vet.

We have experienced regurg from overeating of mealworms Rich, and I believe that 5-8 mealies is too much for a gecko at one time. If we ever feed mealies we feed 1 or 2 at a time, as I have found that they cannot cope with too many.

The thin tail etc though does sound like something more serious, i agree, and I really think you should be seeing the vet at this stage to rule out parasites.
