    Exclamation Broken Leg

My gecko Kevin has a broken leg and i cannot afford to take her to the vet(over 150$ to fix it). she is eating great and attempting to use the leg it's just bent the wrong way, she doesn't seem to have any pain either. the break seems to be close to her knee. My question is should i try to splint it( I'm a tech student so i can do it) and hope it heals in a usable position, leave it and hope it heals, or put her down via cervical dislocation(broken neck) or decapitation? I really don't want to put her down if there is a chance she can live with a limp or useless leg

    Re: Broken Leg

You really don't have a way to tell if the gecko is in pain unless that pain gets so bad he won't eat or move. Please don't kill the gecko if you think this is fixable, even if you don't have the funds. Look around for reptile rescues in your area that could take the gecko or help you pay for the vet.

    Re: Broken Leg

I'm sorry, but if YOU had a broken leg, you would want it fixed. And I KNOW you would want some sort of pain reliever. I can't imagine she's not in a ton of pain. IMO find the money somehow and take her to a vet. Part of owning a pet is proper care.

OH MY! Please don't kill an innocent animal because you simply cant afford to care for it the way you should!

Also, as for the splint what do you think caused this break???? Are you sure it isn't an underlying condition such as MBD?

I know if my leg was broken I would want something for the pain!!! I certainly wouldn't want my neck broken! MY GOD!

    or DECAPITATION Are you SERIOUS?

    Re: Broken Leg

From reading your post, I realize that you have tried to locate a shelter and/or rescue to rehome this leo, and you state that they have no room and can't take it....However, I'm just wondering, have you tried any other sources?? Normally I wouldn't suggest a craigslist type site, however, if you are considering the methods you have mentioned, then I feel that Craigslist or such would probably be a good alternative.....(in other words, even if a reputable shelter isn't available...hopefully an individual in your area can be of assistance and be able to take this animal.)...the other option is to call around to the vets in your area and ask them if they can help you out...
Basically, the Leo really does deserve better, and hopefully someone in your area can assist in ensuring that his/her health is not compromised any further.

    Re: Broken Leg

$150.00 may seem like a lot of money but it is not insurmountable. Ask the vet if s/he will allow for a payment plan, say $50/month. (Cut back on other stuff: coffee shop, a night out, take a bus or walk...) Vets love animals but they also need to pay their staff and other expenses. It's better to get some money than none, and if you pay a few buck in interest, it's worth it.

How did it break its leg?

    Re: Broken Leg

alright so after being called many bad things I found someone to loan me the money and took her to a vet and I was told she probably broke it shedding which happens more often then you would think, that he did not want to anesthetize her because of her size (under 5in) and did not want to put her on any kind of pain meds for the same reason, very easy to overdose, he put a cast/splint on the leg and she flipped out i have never heard a gecko scream befor that and never want to hear it again she worried the leg for a whole day, biting it and screaming when i put food in her cage and she refused to eat when i tried force feeding her like the doc suggested she bit and screeched and wiggled all over the place so i went back to the vet he took the cast off and said well call if anything changes like behavior and food consumption.. she is much happier without a cast and is walking around and eatting right at this moment.. i spend 200$ of barrowed money to have her be sent home with nothing but a " call me if anything changes" stop calling me names and telling me i am a bad owner i lost my job due to the economy i have no more then 20$ at any givin time and i tried to get someone to take her and help her and no one wants an animal with a broken leg.... and cervical dislocation and decapitation were suggested by the vet when i informed them i did not have the money to spend (euthinization through the vet was 100$ too).... i love my kevin but the doctor basically told me to do what i was going to do anyway
