Mealworms...how often
I recently decided to add mealworms to my Leopard Geckos' diets. I figured they'd want some variety from the crickets they're used to. I bought 200 of them for real cheap from the pet store...(by real cheap, I mean free...the guy thought that since I was nice enough to bring his iguanas some food that they'd actually like, he'd give me free food...my crickets were half off, too.)
My question is this...how often should I include the mealworms? Last night I fed them to them, each getting one. I've been told they were a little fattening, so I shouldn't give them the mealworms too often. Could someone specify that "too often" concept for me? I'd appreciate it. Thanks. |

Waxworms and butterworms are the ones that can get fatty. Wax worms should only be fed maybey 3 a month and that is the max ammount. Butterworms should probably be fed or allowed to be fed 5-10 a month unless your leo is in need of ithe extra calcium and some fat.
Mealworm are not high in fat. Look in the FAq's on canadianfeeders.com on the botom of the faq's and you will find the nutrition of some feeders. You can feed him over 50 Leopard Geckos if your leopard gecko feels like eating that much, but a varied diet is more healthy. Mealworms are fine. Ron trmper feeds his geckos mainly almost all mealworms to his Leopard Geckos and he is one of the lead breeders of Leopard Geckos. |

i fed my Leopard Geckos mainly meal worms and crix like once a week. i even left a bowl of meal worms (if you can find something they cant escape out of, crafty little buggers) with some calcium powder in it as well. i fed htem as many mealies they could eat. and of course you still have to dust the food with the appropriate amounts of supplements. i just found it much easier to feed them mainly meal worms instead of crix cos crix are obnoxious
but you do have to look out for the Leopard Geckos that cant digest the meal worms because if htey cant digest them, then they arent getting the nutrients. Danielle |
