Re: Just Got a New Leopard Gecko.

Yeah I am more of a snake person. Still learning about lizards haha, and swiftfan welcome to herpcenter as well, I recommend you keep active here, ive only been here 3 days and these guys have stuffed me with knowledge, ever have a question, please ask them.

Also yeah, I wont be trying to house any different species together, but I do plan on getting a Hypo Tangerine female leo later on, their colours are beautiful and it should keep my leo I have now some company!

And doublez I know they need different temperatures, but I'm sure a 120 gallon could be sufficient in maintaining a few different temperatures depending on the placement of heat lamps, etc. But yeah I agree, I don't think they should be housed together. Ill post pictures of his lizards on Thursday if I can.

Totally horrible keeping practices. At least one of those animals can't be living a stellar life. The temps for Uros and Leopard Geckos are totally different. So is substrate, diet, and a whole slew of other things.

Please send him here!

Re: Just Got a New Leopard Gecko.

I will do my best, he knows alot about them, maybe hes just short on space..all those animals I mentioned he has..well he also has 2 mice, fish, 3 dogs, 1 Irian jaya carpet python, Tortoise and a ferret to go on top of the ones I already mentioned!

He really has a lot of animals. He tried getting a rhino Iguana but the government dissaprooved. Their illegal in Canada to own without approval.

But their is one thing I was really wondering, can an African Fat Tail and Leo be housed together? They are quite alike and require the same temperatures. Jeez I ask to many questions.

Re: Just Got a New Leopard Gecko.

Having all those animals in one tank is not fair to the animals. If he doesn't have space for them all, he simply shouldn't have them. Read my sig, it says a lot. And if he doesn't have space for separate enclosures for all those critters, he CLEARLY doesn't have space for an iguana.

I don't know about "knowing a lot about them." If he knew about proper care, they wouldn't be all together. Lets go back to the Uro. If the uro is kept around the temps of the leo's needs (85-90F), which he has in the same cage, the Uro won't have the proper temps to digest food, leading to all sorts of nutritional problems. If the Leo is kept at the Uro proper temps (110F+) the leo will perish of overheating and dehydration.

Not to mention, Leopard Geckos are insectivores and uros are herbivores, and if the uro eats the insects, it could cause kidney damage in the long run.

Its just not a good idea. I'd also hate to see the leo get squashed by such a large animal.

Re: Just Got a New Leopard Gecko.

Lmao yeah, it would be very sad to see a leo squished.

When I go to his house ill get you guys a bunch of pictures of his setups, and his animals, etc. Then with your opinions about his setups, heating, animals, etc. Ill be able to let him know everything he needs to do, and ill try to get him on this site.

--------> Uhmm I just spoke with him, he said he had 2 different lamps thermometers for each, each one is the correct temperature for the lizard, aswell he said the plated lizard is near the uro in the wild so their temps are about the same, and as for the crickets and the uro eating them, he said during feeding he throws in a divider and puts the uro on the opposite side of the circkets and he lets the leo and plated chow down.

Just because it's the right temp in spot doesn't mean that the animals will sit directly in that spot all day. If he actually cared about the animals he would find them new homes as he clearly isn't giving them the best lives they can have.

Re: Just Got a New Leopard Gecko.

Right, just because there are the right temps on either end, doesn't mean they are getting to them! Having multiple animals in one cage makes stress. Stress makes animals not move and compete for basking/hiding spots.

Please try to talk to him. He sounds like he doesn't want to change, but mostly he needs to be educated.

Re: Just Got a New Leopard Gecko.

Just because you have a lot of animals doesn't meant that you know what you are doing. Anyone can go out and buy a bunch of animals.
That does NOT make them an expert.
One of the things we constantly have to battle is people seeing someone doing something that is horrendously wrong and because that person may talk a good game you get the idea that this is the way to do things.
It isn't.
There are many very knowledgable people who have devoted most of their lives to determining the proper way to care for various species of animals. Exactly what it takes to keep them healthy and thriving and allow them to live out their natural lifespan.
Then someone comes along and doesn't want to hear it. THOSE facts don't apply to THEM!
Then they can't figure out why all their pets are so short lived!
I would also be willing to guess that this person has not had these animals very long.

Re: Just Got a New Leopard Gecko.

Actually he adopted the leo from soemone who had treated it poorly and has had it for 3 years, hes had his uromastyx for 6 and plated for 4. His only really new addition is his tegu, and his oldest is his water dragon he got when he was 7. Now hes just about 16.
