Leopard Gecko Set up
Here is a picture of my Leopard Geckos setup and he is just a little baby. I am wondering if geckos are nocturnal and if my setup is good. Any ideas what to name him?

re: Leopard Gecko Set up
If that is sand, I would get rid of it. Having it in there, you run the risk of impaction, especially if the Leo is just a baby. Plus if you feed him in his tank he can pick up sand while catching prey and eat it. Unlike what it says on the packaging, the sand is not digestible. Other things you can use are pieces of slate, tile, paper towels, newspaper, reptile carpet, shelf liner. Something non particle.
Leopard Geckos I believe are nocturnal. The caresheet should have some helpful tips on your tank set up and just care in general. It's very informative. Hope it helps. Leopard Gecko Caresheet (Eublepharis macularius) - Reptile Information - Caresheets Database Good luck with your baby!

re: Leopard Gecko Set up
Well where I got it from said that the stuff on the bottom (I dont know what it is called.) can not do any harm to the gecko. If I pick the stuff on the bottom you can easily break it apart with a nail or something. Thank-you for the care sheet.

re: Leopard Gecko Set up
You just have to be careful with that. I used to work in a pet store and can tell you from experience, alot of places see the animal as product and will sell you something just to make a sale regardless of whether or not it's bad. Just a warning.
Especially if it's a baby you want to make sure it's pooping and eating properly. Hope the care sheet helps out.

re: Leopard Gecko Set up
Sorry to say but most likely the place you got it from was trying to make a sale. If it's so loose that you can break it with a nail then it could be eaten by you gecko. You could 1. replace it. or 2. Mix it with some loam to make it a hard packed clay type substrate.

Or they were ignorant as to what they were saying. Any particulate substrate is capable of causing an impaction. And especially so with babies. Leopard Geckos do not live on sand dunes but rather on hard packed dirt and rock.

Re: Leopard Gecko Set up
Sand is terrible stuff! No matter what it says on the package or what anybody tells you, it can seriously hurt your gecko and cause impaction. That really needs to be taken out. If you like it for the way it looks, buy a carpet. Some of them look a lot like sand but are much better for the gecko.

Re: Leopard Gecko Set up
I concur on the sand stuff - take it out. Paper towels or shelf liner works perfect, is easy to clean and is cheap!
You need a good thermometer - those dial things are terrible. Since a gecko should have a hot side and a cool side, an inexpensive digital thermometer with a second spot reader is fine. I got an indoor/outdoor thermometer from Home Depot for about $13 -- and once installed I realized my dial was WAY off! Besides the spot reader is great for checking the hot side in different areas to make sure the temps to get too hot. Your set up looks fine, I would however cover the 3 sides of the tank, to give some security to the gecko. I used simple construction paper on the outside, and now I just have a blanket wrapped around it because it gets a little nippy in my house in the winter. He needs a dish for water (which it looks like you have), a dish for calcium powder and mealworms (I use a small glass bowl I picked up at the $ store - 3/$1). And a hide on both the cool side and the hot side. Again, nothing fancy. There are a couple of threads describing how to make hides from stuff you find around the house. My moist hide is made from a margarine tub! For Christmas I just bought a bunch of cool things for my geckos home, and she hasn't touched any of it! I think she is a simple girl at heart! ![]() Hope that helps. (Oh, yes they are nocternal)

Re: Leopard Gecko Set up
Ok I am going to make that tank better then post some pictures when I'm done. In pet stores every where I look in the tank there is that same sand. If that was bad for them then I don't think that the sand is THAT bad for them.

Re: Leopard Gecko Set up
Pet stores don't necessarily have the best interest of the critters in mind - they want the display to look nice and then talk you into all kinds of things you don't need. Also, their animals are not really kept for long- the goal is to sell them, so they don't stay on the sand for long.
The only things I needed to buy my gecko from the pet store was an Under the tank heater and Rehostat (temperature controller). The digital thermometer came from Home Depot and the rest the $store or from my house. As we progressed, and I had more money I added extra things - but she was quite happy with the other stuff.
