Re: Check Out My New Set Up

It looks good. I would seriously suggest getting rid of the sand though. Having it is just asking for impaction...

The key phrase there is "supposed to be".
Its not.
Calcium sand is one of the worst products on the market as it actually encourages the eating of the sand and it is responsible for numerous cases of impaction.

Baby geckos should not be on sand in any form. Some people keep adults on washed play sand but that still risks impaction.
Leopard Geckos do NOT naturally live on sand in the wild but rather on rock and hardpacked earth.

Re: Check Out My New Set Up

Ditch the sand ASAP. put down some tile, shelf liner or paper towels. They aren't on sand in nature and aren't built for walking on it. Plus that stuff is really bad for them over time. Here is a good thread on this subject.

Re: Check Out My New Set Up

Not to start a whole discussion on calci sand, but I think most problems people have had with impaction is due to improper use. Never put fresh greens, or crickets I always give my Leopard Geckos crickets in a separate tuper ware container. This way I can manage and keep track of their consumption.

Re: Check Out My New Set Up

Hello

The thing is that lizards...like geckos lick everything so you still have a chance they will get impacted slowly over time....why risk it for a substract you like cause it looks good.

Re: Check Out My New Set Up

Calcisand is horrid stuff. It's actually amazing that it is suggested for anything. I put this together awhile back, and it explains the reasons that calcisand shouldn't be used. You might find some of the info to be surprising.

Re: Check Out My New Set Up

I know it looks cool and people lead you to believe that it is safe, I think most people have been tricked into buying a bag of the stuff at least once.
I personally use carpet with big flat rocks on top of it, it's much safer and easier to clean!
