Getting everything ready for new leos. Have questions.
I am thinking about getting a couple (2-3 females and 1 male) Leopard Geckos. I want to make sure that I am getting everything I need in order to keep them properly. From the care sheet I need:
A tank: 20 gallon tank long (30x12x12) lying around, is this good to use or should I get a bigger one? 2 hides(1 being the humid hide), water bowl, calcium bowl, Under Tank Heater, 40 watt bulb, 40 watt infared night bulb, couple of diffent decorations for them to hid and climb on and using papertowl as substract. Am I missing anything? Also what is the best substract to use in the humid hide? Also I am looking for some colorfull Leopard Geckos but not looking to spend a lot of money on them (200-300 for everything). What sugestions do you all have and were can I get them from? I have only seen normal Leopard Geckos at petco and I want something more colorful. Also I am going to the NOVA show tomorrow to look. Sorry for all the questions but I want to get it right the first time as I have never kept lizards before. Thanks |

I don't have Leopard Geckos myself, but I want to commend you on setting them up with the proper home before you even buy them! Thanks for researching!

Sphagum moss is what is most often used in moist hides, as for everything else sounds like you have covered pretty much all the bases. Only things you are missing is a Calcium supplement that is D3 and Phosphorus free and a good quality vitamin/mineral supplement.

Are these your first Leopard Geckos? If so you may want to keep the male in a seperate 10 gallon from the females just incase your not ready for what may happen. Also 4 Leopard Geckos the size of juveniles may have quite a high chance of territorial problems, bullying, and refused breeding (which can end up in a big fight and a hurt gecko or two). Ofcoarse in a 20 long though. A 30 long would most likely be perfect. Even females can fight though, so it's nice to have a tank or two hanging around.

Sorry I foget to add that in. I have the rep-cal phosphorus free calcium with vit. D and the rep-cal herptivite with beta carotene. Also I bought the flukers orange cube to feed the crickets. Also I do have a 2 spare 10 gallons just in case I do run in the problem with bulling as such.

The cal supplement sounds pretty good. Without D3 would probably be better though, but at least it doesn't have any phosphorous. The vit supplement is a good one. The Beta Cerotene still provides them with vit A, but without the dangerous risk of overdose (vit A OD is very bad). Never really researched or tried any commercial cricket food, but I trust Flukers.

I couldnt find the calcium witho the D3 at petco or petsmart. I am going to look at the NOVA reptile show today when I go. But all the care sheets I looked at said to keep the calcium witho the D3 in the cage and dust the cricket with calcium containing d3. Is that correct? Also I have a question about humitity. What is a safe humidity to keep them at. i have read to keep them at 10% if I remember correctly but I cannot get the humidity below 40-50% in my house. how can I fix this?
