Need Help

Before I buy my leopard gecko I want to say on this forum what my setup will be like, and I want you to tell me how it sounds.

I am going to buy 2 females and put them in a 24"x18"x12" tank with a lid (smaller if its OK) and with a paper towel substrate. I would have a heating lamp (the gecko can't reach this) and an under tank heating pad on the same side. That side will be maintained at a 88F, the other should be about 75F (so they can choose where to stay). At night I will turn of the light and let the heated side to cool down to 72F. They will have two huts one on the hot side, one on the cool side. The hot side will be a humid hut, with either moss or soil bottom. I will put objects in so they can climb and have fun. I will have a shallow water bowl refilled everyday. A tiny bowl (like a cap of a milk carton) of calcium supplements. The night before I will gut load the crickets
and mealies with a store bought gut loader (or just high vitamin cereal). The next day I will feed my Leopard Geckos each 3 crickets and 3 mealies (I have no clue on how many, please correct me ). Maybe twice a month, as a treat, I will feed them a wax worm. And when needed I will give them vet appointments and clean the tank. Oh, and of course post pictures here (if my camera doesn't act stubborn).

The only question I can think of right now (other than how much to feed them) is if I wanted to get 3 Leopard Geckos (2 females, 1 male), but didn't want babies, is it possible to prevent them from...making love? And would I need to bump up my tank size, if so to what dimensions?

If I have another question I will reply in the thread.

Thank you so much for reading and giving your input, if I finish my research (I almost have...you guys are the last touch) then I get them for my birthday. June 27th!!!

Re: Need Help

You can go a bit higher in your hot side temps. Babies will eat more than 3 crickets daily, feed them as much as they can eat in say 10 to 15 minutes. I also have 2 hides on the warm side, 1 moist and 1 regular. As far as housing males and females,,,there isn't anything you can do to stop them from breeding if there in the same enclosure.

Re: Need Help

If you're going to be house two females you may want a bigger enclosure. they are going to need space between each other. you're also going to need double of all the hides(2 humid, 2 warm, 2 cool) that way you can some what limit competition for places to hide.

i would stick with just an Under Tank Heater. they give plenty of heat and lamps aren't really needed. not only that but they need belly heat more then basking heat. i keep my temps at 92 during the day and leave it on at night, it drops to about 87 86. you can achieve this by using a rheostat.

as ken mentioned they will be eating a lot more then that, when my leo was a baby she easily packed away 14 crickets. sometimes even 18.

there is no way to keep males and females from breeding if they are together. i do have a question though, why would you want to have a male in the same enclosure with two other females anyways?
