Leopard Gecko Keeping His Eyes Closed

My son has a leopard gecko that we have had for quite some time. We recently moved into a new house and bought him a bigger tank too. Since that time he has been keeping his eyes almost closed. He was in the midst of shedding, but this hasn't changed since he finished.

Does anyone know of a good gecko vet in the Abilene, TX area?

Thanks.

How much bigger is the tank? Whats the temps, substrate and does he have a humid hide?

Here is a vet locator.

Re: Leopard Gecko Keeping His Eyes Closed

We use calcium sand for the substrate, he has a moist hide. The tank is double the size of his last tank. I found a 20-gallon aquarium that was shorter than a normal tank but was longer and wider to give him more room.

Another thing that may be contributing is the temperature. The new room where he is kept is upstairs now and is warmer than the rest of the house and may be too hot. Temperature on his cool side is around 72 degrees right now and warm side is 87-90 degrees.

The temps are fine, but you need to get the leo off the calci sand. Its bad stuff and will only cause impaction. It is not digestible as the bag says. The new surrounds and his new tank may have stressed him out. Is he eating ok?

Re: Leopard Gecko Keeping His Eyes Closed

I had to move my two Leopard Geckos into a different room a week or two ago while im getting mine decorated. They got really quiet and stressed from the new surrounding but have got back to normal since

That could be what has happened with your sons leo.

Make sure the temps are ok and get rid of the sand and things may improve in a couple of days.

He is eating fine and his tail is still nice and fat. Hopefully it is just the stress thing and he will be better soon.

I do plan on getting rid of the sand after reading around on this forum. I had no idea it was so bad. Will keep you posted.

Re: Leopard Gecko Keeping His Eyes Closed

I am dealing with a similar situation with me leo Matilda right now. She did not shed well and apparently the shed built up in her eye. She would keep her eye all the way closed or half closed all the time. It has happened one other time, and I was able to use wet Q tips to gently work out the 'skin'. But this time that wasn't working and we had to go to the vet. The vet was able to get her all taken care of and got her eye back to normal and gave a vitamin A shot to help with the next shed. Apparently if they do not get enough vitamin A they do not produce enough lubricant to properly lose the skin around the eye. I did not explain that well, I apologize. The vet did a much better job. But, if he doesn't open it back up after his shed I would take him to the vet. And my parents live in Abilene But I don't know a herp vet around there. Good luck!
