Breeding Leos

I would not think of doing this for awhile yet, but I just figured I'd ask this before even thinking about it.... My leo is a female I'm pretty sure(going to check again for the pores just to make sure I didn't miss them) and is pretty old 7-9 years old...(not sure how old she was when I got her) would the she need to be younger?

Re: Breeding Leos

In general a Leo can live quite some time. There have been reports of 25-30 years (unconfirmed) I would think a 7-9 year old would be fine to breed.

Re: Breeding Leos

You may get one or 2 good seasons out of her, but she really isn't a strong breeder. A leopard gecko between the ages of 2-6 seem to be the strongest breeders yielding 2 eggs per clutch for 5+ clutches a year. (Some as high as 8-10 clutches a season). The older they get, the fewer clutches, and the fewer eggs per clutch they will yield.

Update: It doesn't mean she couldn't be bred. If you are looking for a strong breeder though, you want to have a younger leo. Also, you don't want to breed a leo "one on one". That is very stressful for the female. Ideally, you want to have at least 3 females to one male.

Re: Breeding Leos

They can all be housed in separate enclosures until it is time to breed them. When they are bred, you want to have all 3 females in with the male at the same time. During season, males become very excited and will constantly go after the female. If its one on one, they female can easily get stressed or injured. If there are several females, he will go after each of them which reduces the strain and possible harm to a single female.

Re: Breeding Leos

well I was told that getting another female(s) would be bad for my current gecko because of the age?

and this question is just out of curiousity, how large does a LG tank have to be? My current one is 45g 36x18

Re: Breeding Leos

You want a minimum of 10 gallons for every leo. Since you can't create a heat gradient in a 10 gallon tank, its best to go with a minimum of 15 gallons.

Read this: Leopard Gecko Caresheet (Eublepharis macularius) - Reptile Information - Caresheets Database

You should also buy some literature on leopard geckos, because everything you are asking is covered in all of the decent books out there. Breeding is something you would need to prepare for. The first preparation is to get a few books, read them, see what is involved, and then decide.

We have a literature section here: Reptile Literature - Books

Choose "Lizards" from the right side navigation, then "Geckos". There are several good books listed there. Consider buying a few of them as they are loaded with information.

Re: Breeding Leos

yeah when I got my gecko I was young and was too stupid to do much research. I basically just listened to the pet store. I know all the basic info now for leopards, just nothing about breeding. I only really thought about online forums when I found one for SW fish that has helped me so much.

Re: Breeding Leos

While forums are great for gathering information, they should never be the only resource. I have been breeding leopard geckos now for 10+ years. Two weeks ago I bought Ron Trempers new book on Leopard Geckos. (The Herpetoculture of Leopard Geckos)

This is my 4th or 5th book on Leopard Geckos that I own.

Even those of us with experience own literature and reference it from time to time. Its part of responsible pet ownership.

Re: Breeding Leos

Yeah I have a book I looked through just recently that I had from when I got my gecko, I probably get most of my information from online articles though. I will definately look into a good book, can you suggest one?
