I have two female Leopard Geckos, and feel that they don't get enough interest and variety in their lives. I change their viv around, adding or removing rocks, branches, a small wooden house designed for hamsters, in fact anything I can think of to make them hunt for their food, and so stay in good health. My present idea, as summer approaches, is to make a run for them in the garden, on the lawn, deep enough to be well-protected from magpies and my Jack Russell [they are dog's TV, she is fascinated by them]. I am going to put a shelter in for them, and their usual water and cool box. Can anyone tell me if this is a safe or sensible thing to do? They are intelligent creatures, and I dislike them being incarcerated so much. As our conservatory is secure, I let them loose in there in the evening. I would not leave them unattended at any time, whether indoors or out.

Constant change is very stressing on a reptile. You should set the enclosure, and then leave it set. This allows them to get comfortable and feel secure in their environment.

It is niether. Leopard geckos are nocturnal. If you are tossing them outside during the day, you are disrupting their natural behavior which again can be very stressing on them.

If you want to offer more exploratory areas for your leopard geckos, you could build a custom indoor enclosure for them. If the enclosure were made of plastic or sealed wood, you could expand on it a little at a time and as time permits. This would offer them new locations to explore but would not disrupt their security.
