Re: Salmonella

Yes, just like any reptile or animal for that matter. The likelihood is extremely low if you regularly clean the enclosures and wash your hands after handling. Even then it's extremely unlikely because it take huge doses of it to even cause diareah and usually its found in fecal matter and has to be ingested. So unless you are eating huge amount of gecko poop you should be ok

Not true. Salmonella is a living bacteria that is shed in the feces of the animal. If you introduce even a small amount of the bacteria into your system it can make some people very ill. It is more dangerous to infants, the elderly and people who have immune system suppressing situations such as HIV or are undergoing chemotherapy. And it doesn't have to be ingested(eaten). If you touch mucous membranes such as inside the nose, your eyes, an open cut, etc., the bacteria can be introduced into your system. The best thing is keeping the cage clean and always washing your hands after dealing with the animal or the cage fixtures. And don't kiss your herps!
Leopard geckos are not as big a problem with salmonella as green iguanas and aquatic animals but you should still take your precautions.

Re: Salmonella

best bet is to get the hand sanitizer and use it after handling if you don't want to wash your hand but play it safe like me and wash your hands after touching and cleaning the cage.

Re: Salmonella

I wash and then use the hand sanitizer. I have never gotten it yet, lol. But I am very very careful about the hygiene in my house as I have young kids.

Small rodents can also carry salmonella, from what I was told. Anything that walks through it own feces like guinea puigs, hamsters, rabbits, etc.

wash all the time, like Merlin said. Dont clean their bowls and stuff in your kitchen sink. Dont put them on the counters, etc. If you do you need to be very friendly with the bleach, lol
